Each year, the 2nd graders spend time learning about the countries of Australia, China and Kenya. The 2nd grade teachers are assigned a particular country and they make the study come alive as the students learn about the people and culture. They look up things on the Internet, read books, try different foods, sing songs and even learn a few words in the different languages. The students receive a "passport" folder they take with them from class to class.
2nd grade teacher Kayla Wories, who teaches about China, decided to take the class on a "flight" to kick off their study on China. Dressed as a flight attendant and using the Smart Board as their "window," the students took off for China and even enjoyed an in-flight movie on the Chinese art of Calligraphy. Once they had "landed," they colored the Chinese flag and practiced writing some words in Chinese. The students really enjoyed their flight and look forward to their next trip abroad!
