Phyllis Vos Wezeman - ’64
Phyllis Vos Wezeman has put her education and her gifts to good use: nurturing the spiritual life of her community. Phyllis puts it this way: “Learning is a lifelong process. With each project, I gain more than I give. Finding ways to make abstract concepts, such as faith, real and concrete in my life and the lives of others is my greatest joy.”
She makes the abstract concrete through her many roles that serve an ever-expanding community. From 1989 to 1998, Phyllis was executive director of the Parish Resource Center of Michiana, a nondenominational, not-for-profit organization that provided consulting, workshops, and a library of resources for congregations throughout northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. Currently, she is the director of Christian Nurture for First Presbyterian Church of South Bend, Indiana, responsible for creating programs for children, adult education and enrichment, congregational life, and lay caregiving. She also provides seasonal planning for a congregation of 800 members.
Phyllis is also a freelance writer, conference speaker, and workshop leader with a demanding schedule. She has developed a national reputation with a national and international scope, as the author of 85 books and more than 670 articles. You can check her out on Amazon.com!
She is a board member or consultant for a number of organizations including the American Bible Society, and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Indiana University South Bend School of Education and at the University of Notre Dame in the theology department. Phyllis is an honorary professor at the St. Petersburg (Russia) University of Pedagogical Arts, where she has taught on three different occasions, and has taught in China, through a Christian-based foundation, at the Shanghai International School.
In addition to receiving our Distinguished Alumni Award, she has been awarded the same honor at Indiana University South Bend.
She and husband Ken, a Timothy graduate of the class of ’63, live in Mishawaka, Indiana. They have three children and two grandchildren.
