Trojans Take Two This Weekend

1/8 & 1/9, 2010

The Trojans were finally back in action this weekend. They had not played a game since the Glenbard West Tournament on Dec. 23. On Friday night, they travelled to Fenton for a league contest. The rust was very evident as the Trojans struggled to get any type of a flow on either the offensive or defensive end. Fenton went into halftime with a 36-25 lead. The deficit grew to about 14 with 5:00 left in the quarter when the Trojans went on a strong run and started playing with more intensity. At the end of the 3rd quarter the score was 48-46 in favor of Fenton. The Trojans were able to continue fighting in the 4th quarter in a good battle and held on to win the conference contest 59-54. Rob Stein scored 21 pts and grabbed 5 rebounds. Pt. guard Reggie Greenwood had 12 pts, 6 assists, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds. Justin Peeples and Mark Penczak chipped in with 12 and 7 points respectively. Sophomore Matt Morrison finished with 7 rebounds and 4 points as well. The Trojans showed good intensity the final quarter and a half and gutted out a victory, but know they can play better.

On Saturday night, the Trojans were finally able to play a home game vs. out of state rival Holland Christian from Holland Michigan. The last home game was on Dec. 4. It was nice to be home in a packed house to play a Holland Christian team that was much taller than the Trojans. The Trojans played a much better game than the previous night and came out firing on all cylinders. The intensity that had lacked was present on both the offensive and defensive end and the Trojans were able to get their running game going early which set the tone for the evening. The entire team came out with a lot of energy and it carried over into the entire game. Because of this the Trojans were able to secure a 72-56 victory. A solid all around game was turned in by Reggie Greenwood (21 pts, 7 assists, 5 steals, and 4 rebounds). Rob Stein scored a career high of 32 pts to go along with 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Justin Peeples (7 pts, 5 rebounds), Mike Pizzello (3 steals, 2 assists, 2 rebounds, and 3 pts), Mark Penczak (6 pts, 4 rebounds, 3 assists,) all turned in solid games. The Trojans would like to thank the entire fans for the incredible atmosphere and support at the game. It was greatly appreciated and a fun high school atmosphere. Trojans Split Pair Over the Weekend

12/11-12

The Trojans ended the week by splitting a pair of contests. On Friday night, the Trojans travelled to conference powerhouse Riverside Brookfield. The Trojans came out and matched the Bulldogs in the first quarter for about 5 minutes where the game was tied at 8-8. RB went on a run scoring a couple of 2 point baskets and drilling 4 3 point baskets for a 24-8 lead and never looked back. The Trojans could not generate any type of rhythm against the defense from the Bulldogs and shot very poorly from the field. The final score was 77-39. Reggie Greenwood finished with 13 pts, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Rob Stein played limited minutes because of foul trouble and finished with 10 pts and 7 rebounds. This was not a very strong game for us and we know we will need to play much better the next time we play RB.

On Saturday, the Trojans played Chicago Manley in the Lisle Shootout. Going into the game, there was a big question as to how the Trojans would respond from the previous night's poor performance. The Trojans responded in exciting fashion. Manley was similar in height to the Trojans and played an uptempo game. The Trojans continued to handle the pressure and push the ball up the court gaining an advantage and kept attacking the basket. The final score saw the Trojans scoring a Shootout record of 93 points to Manley's 67. On the defensive side, Manley was able to get some easier shots, but also hit some deep 3 pointers to keep them scoring with the Trojans. This was a solid game with energy coming from everyone. The team did a very good job continuing the unselfish play of sharing the ball (23 assists) and encouraging each other. There were some big stat lines this game, but many times not all the contributions showed up in the stats. Many defensive touches led to steals and assists to teammates. The starters all made strong contributions as Rob Stein (23 pts, 7 reb), Justin Peeples (23 pts, 5 rebs, 4 stls), Reggie Greenwood (16 pts, 6 rebs, 4 stls, and 12 assists), Mark Penczak (4 pts, 3 rebs, 2 assists), Mike Pizzello (4 pts, 4 rebs, 4 assists, 2 stls) all played solid games. Off the bench the Trojans received huge support from sophomore Matt Morrison who contributed 14 pts and 5 rebounds. Chad Vos (2 rebs, 2 assists), Donte Williams (7 pts, 1 reb), Nathan Boot (2 pts, 1 reb), and Nate Ziegler (1 assist) all cracked the stat page. It was a fun game from the offensive standpoint and we were not sure we could remember the last time a Timothy team had scored 93 points.

The Trojans will play this Tuesday evening(7:30 pm) at Nazareth Academy, Friday at Elmwood Park (7:00 pm), and begin the Glenbard West Tournament on Saturday at 4:30 pm vs. Wheaton Academy. Please keep coming out and supporting the Trojans!

Trojans drop first of season vs. Illiana Christian

12/4/09

The men from Timothy loss their first game of the season to Illiana Christian on Friday night. The gym was packed and we had a great atmosphere. Illiana came out and grabbed control in the first quarter and most of the first half. The Trojans battled back and tied the score at half 30-30. In the second half the teams battled back and forth with the game tied with about 4:00 to go in the fourth quarter. The Vikings from Illiana were able to hit the crucial shots and also the free throws down the stretch to win the game 65-49.

The Trojans were outrebounded 41-29 and also struggled to hit shots on this night. They shot just 33% from the field and 55% from the free throw line. The Trojans will continue to work hard in practice and hope to play much better in our next game. The next game is against conference favorite and area powerhouse Riverside Brookfield at their place on Friday night Dec. 11 at 7:00 pm. We really appreciated the tremendous support on Friday. Please keep coming out and supporting the Trojans. The Trojans move to 5-1 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

Timothy victorious over Immaculate Conception

12/3/09

Tuesday night saw the Trojans open up their home schedule vs. neighbors in Elmhurst Immaculate Conception. Both teams came out blazing in the first quarter trading baskets for a 22-16 score at the end of the first quarter. The Trojans were able to increase their lead to 36-24 at the half. In the third quarter, IC was able to cut the lead down to 6 pts. The Trojans responded with a run of their own and were able to win the game by a score of 74-57.

Timothy was led by Robert Stein (24 pts and 16 rebounds). Rob was a force all night. Reggie Greenwood (11 pts and 7 assists) and Mark Penczak (9 pts and 5 assists) also had strong games. An outstanding defensive effort was turned in by Mike Pizzello who was assigned the task of guarding IC's leading scorer. The Trojans shared the ball very well at times tonight and it was a fun game to both watch and be part of. Timothy finished with 20 assists on the evening.

Thank you for a great opening night crowd. Please come out and support the Trojans on Friday night as they open up conference play vs. rival Illiana Christian. The game will be played at Timothy with a tip-off scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Congratulations to the Trojans from Timothy Christian for winning the Lisle Thanksgiving Championship! They beat Montini, Team Englewood, Chicago Perspectives, and then Lisle in the championship contest.

On Friday night the Trojans played against Chicago Perspectives Charter and their 6'8 center Anthony Davis. Although Davis ended the night with 41 points (18 in the fourth quarter), the Trojans were able to keep control most of the game and prevail 80-61. Contributions came from all players and they were led by Justin Peeples (18 points, 3 assists) and Reggie Greenwood.

Mike Pizzello and Rob Stein contributed 6 rebounds and Mark Penczak (8 points, 4 rebounds), Matt Morrison (9 points, 6 rebounds), Chad Vos (6 points), and Troy Ellens (5 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals) all played key roles.

Saturday night was against the 3-0 Lisle Lions for the tournament championship. This game was a good test for the team as the teams battled back and forth and the Trojans were unable to shake the Lions from Lisle until the final score of 62-45.

Overall strong play tonight as Rob Stein (17 points, 11 rebounds), Justin Peeples (17 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds), and Reggie Greenwood (11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 9 assists), Mark Penczak (10 points, 2 rebounds) and Mike Pizzello (2 points, 2 steals, 2 rebounds, 2 assists) all gave strong contributions to secure the championship.

Coach LeGrand was very pleased with the play of the Trojans in the young season capturing the championship. The entire team has been working hard together and did a very good job. We have identified some items we need to keep working on to get better, but overall did a good job in this tournament.

Reggie Greenwood, Justin Peeples, and Rob Stein were selected on the all-tournament teams. Good job guys and well deserved!
