Mrs. Mary Clauss
Personal Profile
I am excited to be a part of the Timothy Christian family. My husband Bob and I live in Glen Ellyn with our two sons, Joe, 17 and Ted, 12. Our oldest son, Hank, is a freshman at Miami of Ohio. I also am a fitness instructor, teaching weight training classes and yoga at the YMCA in Glen Ellyn. I am a high school Sunday school teacher at our church, First Presbyterian in Glen Ellyn, where I am also active in our mission program with the Sioux Indian Nation in Northeastern Montana. I also enjoy reading, gardening, and knitting.
Professional Profile
I graduated from University of Illinois with a degree in English and Philosophy. For eight years I worked for American Express Company in the vacation travel division. I stopped working to stay home with our three sons, volunteering both at their schools and at our church. As our children got older, and more independent, I decided to pursue a career in teaching, and received my teaching certificate from Trinity Christian College. I have been substitute teaching prior to accepting this teaching position, and look forward the challenges and rewards of freshman English.
Philosophical Profile
Novels, plays, poetry all share the common thread of understanding the human experience from a variety of worldviews. Becoming aware of these perspectives help us as Christians to make a difference in this world, through awareness, evaluation, and perspective. A student of English will not only read a variety of texts, but will communicate his or her thoughts through writing, speaking, listening, and interacting with one another. I like to think of the classroom as a place where we can support one another’s opinions, build one another up, and enjoy fellowship in a learning environment. Just as we develop in our Christian faith, we can also develop in our academic life, and apply what we learn to God’s direction in each of our lives.
