Accelerated Reading
What is Accelerated Reader?
“AR” is a computer-based assessment that measures students’ reading comprehension and provides immediate feedback on students’ progress. Students take a factual, multiple-choice test on a book which they have read. Over 110,000 books are in the test database. Each book is assigned a number of points based on length and reading level of the book. Students earn a number of points based on number of questions answered correctly.
How does Timothy use Accelerated Reader?
This program is used at Timothy in two ways. First, teachers use the program to check comprehension and to monitor quarterly reading requirements. Grades 3-8 have quarterly point requirements for Accelerated Reader. Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade take Accelerated Reader tests at the recommendation of their teachers. All tests are taken in the library. The second way that Accelerated Reader is used is to motivate students to increase their personal reading. This aspect is managed by the library staff.
How do I know if a book has an Accelerated Reader test and how many points it is worth?
You can go to the following website: www.arbookfind.com.
What if I have read a book that does not have a quiz?
Students can receive Accelerated Reader points by writing a brief book report. Click here to get the form and instructions.
Does the book have to be in our library?
Books do not have to be from our library. Students may read and receive credit for any book listed on www.arbookfind.com.
Can parents be informed about their child’s progress?
Yes. Click on the link labeled “Check Accelerated Reader Progress” found on the library’s webpage, or click here to use a feature called HomeConnect. You may contact the library for log-in information.
My child didn’t get any points for the book he/she just read. What happened?
Students must pass a quiz with at least 60% correct to receive any points. Points are pro-rated based on the percentage correct. Longer books with 20 questions require 70% correct to pass. Students may not re-take quizzes.
May students take a quiz for a book that they have only listened to, such as read-alouds and audiobooks?
Yes. However, students must be able to read the quiz on the computer. The quiz will be at a reading level comparable to the book. If a student is unable to read the book himself, he may have difficulty with the quiz.
What is the system for giving Accelerated Reader prizes and awards?
The library sponsors the Accelerated Reader awards for K-8 students. Students are given small rewards at the end of each quarter for points which they have earned (5 points per prize in grades K-2; 10 points per prize in grades 3 and up). Students are also given ribbons at the end of the year for 25 points (Grades K-3 only), 50 points (Grades K-4 only), 75 points (Grades K-5 only), 100, and 150 points. Trophies are given to students who earn 200 or more points, and medals are given to the top point-earner in each grade level. Students who have earned ribbons and trophies receive them at the end of the year.
