What is Accelerated Reader?
“AR” is a computer-based assessment that measures students’ reading comprehension and provides immediate feedback on students’ progress. Students take a factual, multiple-choice test on a book which they have read. Over 110,000 books are in the test database. Each book is assigned a number of points based on length and reading level of the book. Students earn a number of points based on number of questions answered correctly.
How does Timothy use Accelerated Reader?
This program is used at Timothy to motivate students to increase their personal reading. Teachers also use the program to check comprehension and to monitor quarterly reading requirements. Grades 3-12 have quarterly point requirements for Accelerated Reader. Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade read and take Accelerated Reader tests at the recommendation of their teachers. All tests are taken in the libraries.
How do I know if a book has an Accelerated Reader test and how many points it is worth?
You can use this link to a website called ARBookfind:
Does the book have to be in our libraries?
Students may read and receive credit for any book on the Accelerated Reader list; books do not have to be from our libraries.
Can parents be informed about their child’s progress?
Yes. Click here to link to a feature called HomeConnect. You may contact the library for log-in information.
My child didn’t get any points for the book he/she just read. What happened?
Students must pass a quiz with at least 60% correct to receive any points. Points are pro-rated based on the percentage correct. Longer books with 20 questions require 70% correct to pass.
May students take a quiz on a book which they have listened to on tape or has been read to them?
Yes. However, students must be able to read the quiz on the computer. The quiz will be at a reading level comparable to the book. If a student is unable to read the book himself, he will probably be unable to pass the quiz.
What is the system for giving Accelerated Reader prizes and awards?
The library sponsors the Accelerated Reader awards for K-8 students. Students are given small rewards at the end of each quarter for points which they have earned (5 points per prize in grades K-2; 10 points per prize in grades 3 and up). Students are also given ribbons at the end of the year for 25 points (Grades K-3 only), and 50 (Grades K-4 only), 100, and 150 points. Trophies are given to students who earn 200 or more points, and medals are given to the top point-earner in each grade level. Students who have earned ribbons and trophies receive them at the end of the year.
