Freshman Volleyball - Fall 2011

Freshmen Volleyball Has Disappointing Outcome at CCHS tournament
9/10/11
The lady Trojans played in their first tournament of the season this past weekend at Chicago Christian High School. The ladies came in to the tournament with a 4-0 record and were looking to continue that streak on Saturday. The tournament was set up as a regular round robin tournament with the winner being the team with the best win-loss record after round robin play. The ladies started the tournament against Illiana and found out in two quick sets that the intensity of this tournament was much more than they were expecting. TC failed to pass the ball well and were too often reacting too late to hits, tips, and serves. After losing for the first time this season, TC was ready to rally against CCHS in their next match. The ladies started off great, winning the first set 25-19. They passed the ball much better and were able to surpass the intensity of CCHS in their home court! The second set saw a much different TC team and the Knights won the set with some good serving and timely attacks. In the third set, Timothy started off with where they ended set 2. CCHS generated a quick 10-3 lead until Juliana Stremler put together an incredible streak of 6 aces in a row to get them tied up again at 10. With great serving, CCHS picked TC’s serve receive apart and took the final set 15-11. In the final game, Timothy played ACC. Perhaps shocked by two losses in a row, Timothy continued to react slowly and couldn’t stay focused on the task ahead of them. The ladies tried to ratchet up the intensity, but their efforts seemed too little to put together a win. They lost their final game in 2 sets.
For the tournament, Juliana had 15 aces and only 6 errors on 28 attempts. Despite a poor serve receive, a bright spot was Emily Becker with a team best serve receive rate of 1.76 (on a scale from 0-3).
Overall, the ladies learned how to rally around each other and were able to generate intensity and encourage each other to perform better as a team. Though their efforts didn’t translate into wins, Timothy is eager to put this tournament behind them and get back on track in the W column. Thanks to Macy Davidson for helping with stats and the parents who came out to support the girls at CCHS.
Freshman Volleyball Mark a Win for First Conference Match
9/8/11
Timothy vs. Riverside-Brookfield W 2-0 (27-25, 25-16)
TC played R-B at home on Thursday in their first Conference match of the season. In the first set, R-B and Timothy were within a point for most of the set. There were multiple lead changes as the girls were able to keep up with R-B and never let them generate much of a lead. With some clutch serving from Heidi Huiner and Emily Becker, the Trojans were able to come away with points when it mattered and won the first set 27-25.
In the second set, the lady Trojans developed a lead early and managed to hold on the rest of the way winning the second set 25-16. TC attack was led by Juliana Stremler (7 kills, 1 ace) and Mel Ziegler (6 kills, 1 ace). Heidi Huiner had a great match serving the ball with 2 aces and no errors on 12 attempts. The next match for TC is this Saturday at the CCHS tournament.
Freshmen Volleyball vs. the Latin School
9/7/11
W 2-0 (25-12, 25-18)
The ladies traveled into the city for a match against Latin to kick off a busy week for freshmen girls’ volleyball. They started off the first set with an 11-6 lead, which could have been a much greater lead had they shown some more consistency in their serving. TC showed some signs of life on a few plays taking swings and putting the ball away, but the first set showed little energy from both squads. TC won 25-12. The second set saw TC come to life making some first passes and improved serving making only 2 errors in the set. Mel Ziegler made use of those good passes setting up the attack repeatedly. Despite being down 7-3 to start the second set, the girls stayed focused and improved on the things that were missing in the first set. They came away with a win in two sets for the first time this year taking the second set 25-18. Heidi Huiner had a great serving game and Ashley Allen played strong all around the court. Congrats to Mel Z for coming away with her first win at the setter position. The Lady Trojans improved to 3-0 on the season.
Freshman Volleyball Victorious vs. Wheaton Academy
9/1/11
W 2-1 (25-20, 17-25, 25-18)
The freshmen Lady Trojans continued their winning ways on Thursday against the visiting Wheaton Academy. In the first set, the ladies arguably played the best team game they have so far in this early season. They covered well and hit the ball with incredible efficiency. While Wheaton Academy was able to stay with TC in this set, the ladies held control and won majority of the rallies. They could have finished this game much earlier but missed a couple opportunities with some service errors. They managed to pull out with a 25-20 win.
In the second set, the Trojans experimented with a “new-look” lineup that saw Melanie Ziegler play setter and Heidi Huiner swinging on the outside. It took the girls a little bit to get the feel of their new positions and fell behind 20-5. However, they went on a 12-5 run to finish the game, but it was too little too late as Wheaton took set two 25-17.
In the third set, the ladies went back to a comfortable system and played similar to game 1. They maintained control from the first serve and won comfortably 25-18. The Timothy attack was led by Juliana Stremler (9 kills), Kaitlyn Gehrke (7 kills, 1 block) and Tabitha Joyner had a very strong serving game going for 3 aces on 10 attempts. Heidi Huiner dictated the play with great hustle and control at the setter position. The ladies are looking forward to their next game against Latin on Wednesday night.
Freshmen Lady Trojans Begin Season with a Win
W 2-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-8)
The lady Trojans started off the 2011 season away against Westmont high school. They were able to conquer their nerves early by controlling the play and jumping out to a great start in the first set leading by up to 8 points. Westmont rallied hard and closed the gap to 2 points with great serving and some key defensive scrambling, but TC held on to win the first set 25-21.
The second set saw Timothy finding their rhythm and keeping a slim lead through most of the set. The ladies ran into trouble with some tough serving from Westmont which pulled the game close at 21-19. Two times TC had an opportunity to build on that lead, but ended up losing points off the serve. Westmont poured it on forcing the game beyond 25 points. The game see-saw for three possessions until Westmont pulled ahead 28-26 for the win in the second set.
In the final set the Trojans really started to gel and stuck to what they knew best, positioning and ball control. At one point TC held a 15-1 lead and never looked back closing out the final game 25-8.
All girls on the team saw some game time and played hard. Emily Becker played well at the net while Juliana Stremler and Kaitlyn Gerhke led the attack. Overall, it was a great start to the season as Westmont is known for a strong program all the way through.
