Spanish Program
Our Spanish program was launched at the beginning of the 2006-07 school year. Students in grades two through six have Spanish class twice a week for 30 minutes. They have white Spanish folders in their desks, and may take them home occasionally to finish up an activity page or small project. Students in grades seven and eight take Spanish everyday for nine weeks, then rotate to another nine-week course.
Why Spanish?
You can probably see that the Spanish language and Hispanic culture has an increasing presence around the Chicago area. Spanish, therefore, is a very practical option! Learning Spanish as a second language also encourages us to explore the diversity God created; we hope to foster respect, appreciation, and communication across cultures.
What is Spanish class like?
We will be learning the Spanish language and about Hispanic culture by speaking, listening, reading and writing. Classroom activities include games, songs, books, drama, charades, conversations, art, research…the list goes on!
Will there be homework and tests?
Grades seven and eight will receive homework similar to their other classes. They will demonstrate their abilities not only through traditional tests/quizzes, but also through projects, skits, posters, etc.
Grades two through six will receive homework infrequently. At this level, homework may take the form of finishing a project we began in class, continuing to memorize a Bible verse we have been practicing in class, reading a book your child has written at school to a parent or sibling, researching (in English) a country or cultural topic.
These students will be assessed in two ways during each unit of study: they will show me that they understand what they read or hear, and they will show me that they can speak or write to express themselves

p.s. The Spanish program is happily accepting donations of toy foods…fake fruits/vegetables, play McDonald’s food…anything!
Also, I would love to have a few more Mr. Potato Heads and/or his “parts” to use in class. ¡Gracias!”
