Girls Sophomore Basketball - 2009-10

2/4/2010 - vs Elmwood Park -W-35 – 31

The sophomore Lady Trojans finished their season on a positive note as they avenged an earlier conference loss at Elmwood Park with a solid team effort.  After a 1st period 8 – 4 advantage, the Lady Trojans saw Elmwood Park come back in the 2nd period to take a 3 point lead into the locker room as they sank 2 treys and scored 14 points.  Timothy came back to outscore Elmwood Park 9 – 6 which knotted the score after 3 periods at 24 - 24.  In an exciting fourth quarter, four of the Lady Trojans scored to give the team its 4 point victory margin, 35 – 31.  Tessa Bosman led the scoring with 10 points followed by Michelle Ditchfield with 8 points.  Jessica Dirkse scored 6 points on 3 – 4 shooting from the floor.  Elena Denny, Amber Scheidt and Caitlin Nelson came off the bench to score 5 points, 4 points and 2 points respectively.  Shelly pulled down 6 rebounds while Tessa grabbed 5.  Paige Greenwood contributed 3 steals.  It was a good way to end the season as everyone on the team made a significant contribution to the final outcome.  The sophomore girls ended their season with an excellent record of 18 wins and 7 losses (6 – 4 in the Metro Suburban Conference).

2/2/2010  - vs Chicago Christian HS -W  - 28 – 22

The Lady Trojans scored half of their points in the final quarter as they overcame a 5 point deficit at the end of three periods to win by 6.  The sophomore girls used a combination of tenacious defense holding the Knights to just 3 final period points and improved offense to finally take the lead late in the game.  Jessica Dirkse led the surge with 7 of her team leading 9 points in the 4th quarter.  Tessa Bosman chipped in 8 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Michelle Ditchfield also pulled down 8 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.

1/28/2010  - @ Riverside-Brookfield HS - L -18 – 38

The Lady Trojans lost a tough conference game on the road to Riverside-Brookfield which dropped their conference record to 5 – 4.  The girls did a very good job of handling the R-B press and zone defense but unfortunately, it was not a good shooting night for the Lady Trojans.  R-B also benefited from their superior height inside with quite a few offensive rebounds and put-backs.  Timothy fought hard for the entire 28 minutes but came up short on the scoreboard.  Jessica Dirkse and Michelle Ditchfield led the team in scoring with 7 pts. and 6 pts. respectively.  Shelly also pulled down 7 rebounds.

1/27/2010  - @ Latin School  - W -39 – 8

The Lady Trojans traveled to downtown Chicago to face the Lady Romans of the Latin School and came home with a convincing victory.  Every girl on the team made a significant contribution as 9 of the 10 girls scored during the game.  Tessa Bosman led the team in scoring with 15 points followed by Jessica Dirkse with 8.  Paige Greenwood made 4 steals and Michelle Ditchfield contributed 4 assists as she consistently fed Tessa inside or skipped passes across to Jessica for open shots.  Amber Scheidt came off the bench for 2 baskets and Ciara Hoddenbach, Caitlin Nelson, Hope Zigterman and Brooke Wagner all scored a field goal apiece against the Roman 1 – 2 – 2 zone defense.

1/25/10  @ Illiana Christian - L - 25 – 28

The sophomore Lady Trojans suffered a tough conference loss at Illiana Christian on Monday night.  After holding a narrow 3 point lead at half-time and maintaining the lead through most of the 3rd quarter, #4 from Illiana hit her only basket of the game at the 3rd quarter buzzer with a “hope shot” from about 25 – 30 feet which put Illiana up by one to end the period.  The 4th quarter was a battle as each team scored 3 field goals but Illiana converted on 4 of 9 from the free throw line and Timothy could only manage 1 for 5 and went 0 – 4 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes.  The Lady Trojans had their chances but kudos to the Lady Vikings for finishing the game strong for the victory.  Jessica Dirkse led the team in scoring with 10 points on 5 field goals followed by Tessa Bosman with 8 on 3 field goals and a pair of free throws.  Shelly Ditchfield played one of her best all-around games of the year as she chipped in 5 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 assists.  The loss drops Timothy to 5 – 3 in the MSC standings and 15 – 6 for the season.

1/21/2010  - vs Walther Lutheran  - W -33 – 32

For the 2nd time in a week, Timothy’s sophomores had to battle to the wire to earn a victory.  A quick and scrappy Walther Lutheran sophomore team kept the Lady Trojans on their heels as they attacked the full court press with effective speed dribbling.  However, an effective half court defense effort and balanced scoring kept Timothy on top by 3 at half-time.  Jessica Dirkse had 5 points at the break, Tessa Bosman had 9, Michelle Ditchfield and Elena Denny each chipped in a field goal and Kaylee Huisman hit one of two free throws.  The second half was almost all Tessa as she received numerous passes into their zone defense from her team mates and scored 12 of the teams 14 points.  Mackenzie Schaeffer chipped in the teams only other points of the half with a nice move inside while giving Tessa a break.  Defensively the team abandoned the full court press and concentrated on containing the Lady Broncos with a mixture of zone and M-M half court defense.  Michelle and Tessa each grabbed 6 rebounds apiece and Paige Greenfield made 4 steals.  It was an exciting game and well-earned victory by the entire team!

1/19/2010  - @Nazareth Academy     W  - 34 – 31

The sophomore girls played their best first half of basketball for the season as they built a 5 point margin over the Lacy Road Runners of Nazareth Academy at the break.  Nazareth used a variety of defenses including a full court press, man to man and 1-3-1 zone, but excellent ball movement by the perimeter players and strong finishes inside by the post players helped keep the Lady Trojans in control against a very talented and athletic Nazareth team.  Nazareth closed the gap to one point at the end of three quarters but a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter limited Nazareth to only two points from the free throw line and Timothy was able to hold on for the 3 point victory.  Tessa Bosman and Elena Denny led the team in scoring with 14 and 12 points respectively, with many of their baskets coming as a result of excellent passes from the perimeter.  Michelle Ditchfield handed out 4 assists and Jessica Dirkse and Paige Greenwood each added 2 each.  Tessa was strong on the boards with 7 rebounds and Michelle pulled down 5 rebounds.  Paige also contributed 3 steals.  The team also benefited by strong play off the bench by Amber Scheidt, Mackenzie Schaeffer, Hope Zigterman and Kaylee Huisman.

1/16/10 - vs Ridgewood HS - W  - 42 – 23

The sophomore Lady Trojans picked up their 5th conference victory on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Lady Rebels from Ridgewood High School.  It was a strong team effort as all of the girls made positive contributions throughout the game.  Tessa Bosman led the team in scoring with 15 points followed by Elena Denny, Jessica Dirkse and Mackenzie Schaeffer with 8, 7 and 6 points each.  Tessa, Elena and Kaylee Huisman each pulled down 6 rebounds.  Paige Greenwood made 7 steals followed by Michelle Ditchfield with 4.  It was a good way for the team to end a stressful week of exams.

1/9/10 - vs Holland Christian - W - 23 – 17

Timothy’s sophomore girls finished a busy 1st week of 2010 with an exciting and hard fought win over Michigan rival, Holland Christian.  For the 3rd time of the week, the team got off to a great start in the 1st quarter, building a 9 – 2 lead after seven minutes.  However, Holland Christian fought back in the 2nd quarter, led by Kuck’s 7 points to take an 11 – 10 lead at the half.  It may have been the fatigue of 3 games in 4 days or Holland Christian’s defense, but the wheels came off the Lady Trojan’s offense as they were limited to 2 points in both the 2nd and 3rd quarter.  To their credit, they continued to fight hard on defense and actually limited Holland Christian to only 1 point in the 3rd quarter (one parent’s comment was that it was the most exciting 2 – 1 point quarter they had ever watched!).  Finally, the lid came off the basket in the 4th quarter.  Tessa Bosman’s offensive put-back broke the ice and Timothy was able to out-score the Maroons 10 – 4 down the stretch.  Although it was certainly one of the team’s worst shooting nights, they were able to rely on their defense to keep them in the game and eventually score enough to pull away in the 4th quarter.  Elena Denny scored 8 points to lead the team.  Tessa pulled down 11 rebounds followed by Elena with 9 caroms.  Jessica Dirkse distributed 3 assists.

1/8/10  - @ Fenton  - W - 43 – 20

The Lady Trojans picked up where they left off on Wednesday as they again jumped out to a quick 1st quarter lead, 14 – 2, using an effective press and good transition offense.  The second quarter was more of the same as everyone got involved building the lead to 24 – 6 at the break.  The team continued to play well in the second half and came away with a comfortable 23 point victory.  The team was led in scoring by their twin towers, Tessa Bosman with 11 and Elena Denny with 10.  Jessica Dirkse chipped in 7 from the perimeter.  Elena pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double and Michelle Ditchfield contributed 3 assists.

1/6/2010 - vs Lisle - W - 32 – 24

Playing some of their best basketball of the season, the Lady Trojans cruised to an 8 point victory over the Lady Lions.  Strong defense, an effective press and playing an up tempo game allowed the team to build a quick 9 point lead (13 – 4) at the end of the 1st quarter.  This allowed most of the players to get some quality playing time and although the scoring pace slowed in the 2nd quarter, the strong defense continued and the team took a comfortable 9 point lead to the locker room at half time.  A strong 11 point 3rd quarter increased the lead slightly (16 – 13).  Although Lisle knocked down 3 treys in the 4th quarter, the victory was secure.  Tessa Bosman scored 17 points, Michelle Ditchfield pulled down 6 rebounds, and Paige Greenwood made 7 steals.

  • 12/22/09  - vs Plainfield North  - L - 29 – 51
    • Plainfield North jumped off to an early commanding lead as the Lady Trojans struggled handling the ball against their pressure defense.  They also featured one of the best individual players we will see as #54 scored 27 points.  After trailing at half-time by 16, we cut the lead to about 10 in the 3rd quarter but were unable to draw any closer.  Tessa lead the team with 13 points and 6 rebounds while Paige had 6 steals and 4 assists.
  • 12/23/09 - vs Westmont - W - 23 – 6
    • Just a week earlier, the Lady Trojans held on to a 2 point victory over Westmont, but a strong defensive effort helped the team cruise to an easy victory as they held the Lady Sentinels to only 3 field goals.  Jessica Dirkse and Elena Denny each scored 6, Michelle pulled down 8 rebounds and Paige again came up with 6 steals.
  • 12/26/09 - vs Nazareth  - L - 34 – 38
    • In the final game of the tournament for 3rd place, the Lady Trojans got down early trailing by 7 at the 1st quarter and 9 at the half.  But a strong 4th quarter effort helped them pull to the final 4 point difference.  Tessa led the team in scoring with 16 points, Elena pulled down 5 rebounds, Paige had 5 steals and Michelle dished out 7 assists.

12/17/2009 @ Elmwood Park - L-27–29

The Lady Trojans were defeated in conference play at Elmwood Park by a scrappy Lady Tiger sophomore team.  The game stayed close from beginning to end.  Numerous turnovers (27) and poor shooting (30% Field Goals and 2 – 9 Free Throws) eventually took their toll as Elmwood Park pulled out the victory.  Tessa Bosman scored 7 points and pulled down 6 rebounds to lead the team.

12/15/2009 - @ Westmont  - W- 27 – 26

The sophomore girls played 3 excellent quarters of basketball and then held on in the fourth quarter to escape with a one point victory over Westmont HS.  After leading by 5 at half-time and extending the lead to 10 at the end of the third, the Lady Trojans came up scoreless in the 4th while Westmont scored 9 unanswered points.  Jessica Dirkse led the team with 9 points followed by Tessa Bosman with 8.  Jessica also pulled down 4 rebounds.  Paige Greenwood made 5 steals and Michelle Ditchfield contributed 3 assists.

12/8/09 - vs Fenton HS -W-32 – 19

The sophomore girls improved their record to 3 – 0 in the Metro Suburban Conference as they defeated the Lady Bison of Fenton HS.  It was a strong team effort in the 2nd half hat helped the Lady Trojans pull away.  8 girls scored in the game, led by Tessa Bosman with her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Jessica Dirkse contributed 6 points, Elena Denny had 5 rebounds and Paige Greenwood had 4 steals.

12/5/09  - vs Illiana Christian HS - W-23 – 18

The Lady Trojan sophomore girls played an outstanding defensive game, holding Illiana to only 8 points over the first three quarters, building a 21 – 8 lead.  Although it was not a good shooting night for the team, 17 steals contributed enough offensive opportunities to build a comfortable lead.  Seven girls scored in the game, led by Tessa Bosman with 6.  Elena Denny pulled down 5 rebounds and Paige Greenwood contributed 6 steals.

12/3/09 @ St. Joseph HS - W-30 – 22

The sophomore girls over came 27 turnovers to defeat St. Joseph HS on the road on Tuesday night.  Michelle Ditchfield had a fine offensive night as she scored 11 points on 5 – 7 shooting including a three point field goal.  Tessa Bosman swept the boards for 8 rebounds.  Paige Greenwood picked up an incredible 11 steals.

12/1/2009 vs Ridgewood - W-34-16

Pretty good team defense forced numerous Ridgewood missed shots and turnovers enabling the sophomore girls to build a 20 – 2 half-time lead.  This helped provide considerable playing time for everyone on the team.  Ridgewood employed a variety of defenses which challenged the Lady Trojans to adjust their offense and play under control.  Tessa Bosman led the team in scoring with 10 points followed closely by Jessica Dirkse with 8 and Michelle Ditchfield with 7.  Paige Greenwood and Jessica Dirkse each came up with 3 steals and Michelle had a couple very nice assists.  Ciara Hoddenbach came off the bench to lead the team with 4 rebounds.

11/18 – 11/21/09 - Timothy Sophomore Tournament - 2nd Place- 2 – 1

The sophomore girls basketball team finished second place in their own invitational tournament as they lost their first game to Aurora Central Catholic by one point 34 – 35.  They then proceeded to defeat Aurora Christian 38 – 32 and Immaculate Conception  34 – 17.  It was a good way to start the season as everyone got some playing time and team play improved with each game.  Tessa Bosman led the team in scoring for the tournament with a total of 30 points followed by Michelle Ditchfield, Jessica Dirkse and Elena Denny each with a total of 16 points.  Elena Denny led the team in rebounds with a total of 15 caroms followed by Tessa Bosman and Jessica Dirkse each with 11. Other individual highlights were Michelle Ditchfield with 8 assists and Jessica Dirkse with 8 steals.  The team shot a respectable 45% from the field but needs to improve on its 47% free throw percentage.  Metro Suburban Conference play opens up with an away game at Ridgewood HS on December 1 @ 5:30 pm.
