Game Summaries
1/30/08 - vs. Wheaton Academy - W-35-31
The sophomore girls basketball team finished their season on Wednesday night at Wheaton Academy with a 35 – 31 victory over the Lady Warriors. This was the seventh victory in a row for the young Lady Trojans as they finished the season undefeated in January. Once again it took a total team effort since Timothy struggled hitting shots from the outside, but Maggie Vander Woude, Lauren Troxel and Amanda Dykema all came up big inside scoring 12, 8 and 6 respectively. Janna Strodtman also chipped in 8 points, all in the first half as she was the only Lady Trojan to hit any perimeter shots. The defense was key as Wheaton Academy was held to 2 points in the third quarter, which gave the Lady Trojans the opportunity to build a 6 point advantage. Timothy dominated the boards as Amanda led the team with 12 rebounds and Maggie added 9. Kari LeGrand, Liz Powers and Krista Wielard were all key in handling the Wheaton Academy defensive pressure. Kari also dished out 5 assists, several on long passes to break the Wheaton Academy full court pressure with easy lay-ups.
1/28/08 - vs. Aurora Christian - W-39-38
The sophomore girls improved to 15 – 8 with a 39 – 38 win over Aurora Christian in their third meeting of the year. Turnovers (27) plagued the Lady Trojans through out the game, but once again they refused to quit and Maggie Vander Woude’s old-fashioned 3 point play with 11 second left was just what they needed. Janna Strodtman led the team in scoring with 11, Kari LeGrand dished out 7 assists and Maggie and Amanda Dykema led the team in rebounds with 9 and 8 respectively.
1/26/08 - vs. Wheaton Academy - W-39-35
The sophomore girls improved their PSL record to 5 – 2 and their season record to 14 – 8 with a hard fought victory over Wheaton Academy, 39 – 35. After a one point deficit at half-time 17 – 18, Janna Strodtman chipped in 5 of the teams 11 3rd quarter points as they pulled to a 4 point advantage and maintained that lead to the end. Maggie Vander Woude led the team in scoring with 13 while 5 other players scored 5 or 6 points, characteristic of the team balance they have relied on all year. Amanda Dykema pulled down a season high 15 rebounds followed by Maggie with 9.
1/22/08 - vs. Chicago Christian - W-31-29
The sophomore girls basketball team improved their PSL record to 4 – 2 and their season record to 13 – 8 as they defeated the Lady Knights from Chicago Christian 31 – 29. The key to the victory was outstanding team defense throughout the game. The winning basket came on a beautiful pass from Krista Wielard to Amanda Dykema who banked it in. Maggie Vander Woude came up big inside as she led the team in scoring with 13 points and also collected 8 rebounds. Amanda Dykema chipped in 7 boards and Kari LeGrand added 9 points.
1/18/08 - vs. Aurora Christian - W-38-26
It was an excellent team effort on Friday night as the sophomore girls were able to reverse the tables in their rematch with Aurora Christian. After a tight first half with Timothy up by one, 13 – 12, the Lady Trojans came up with a big 16 point 3rd quarter and defeated the Lady Eagles by a score of 38 – 26. Leading the Lady Trojans in scoring were Kari LeGrand with 11 points and Liz Powers with 9 points. Amanda Dykema pulled down 12 rebounds and Kari LeGrand dished out 7 assists.
1/12/08 - vs. St. Ignatius - W-27-23
The sophomore girls started the game with one of their best halves of the season as they jumped out to a 24 - 8 half time lead over the freshman team of St. Ignatius HS. The second half was all St. Ignatius as the Lady Trojans struggled to score against a very good full court defense. However, Timothy was able to hold on for a 27 - 23 victory, in spite of being held scoreless in the 4th quarter. Leading scorers were Janna Strodtman with 6 and Liz Powers with 5. Amanda Dykema had 3 rebounds to lead the team.
1/8/08 - vs. Westminster Christian - W-23-19
The sophomore girls played quite well in their first game after the Christmas break. After jumping out to a 9 – 0 lead in the first quarter, they held off the Warrior’s charge in the 4th quarter to come away with a 23 – 19 victory. Kari LeGrand led in scoring with 9 points, including two big free throws down the stretch plus 5 steals. The Lady Trojans were led on the boards by Amanda Dykema and Maggie Vander Woude, each with 7 caroms.
12/28/07 - Christmas Tournament
The sophomore girls basketball team finished 2 - 2 in the Immaculate Conception Christmas tournament. The results of the 4 games: Timothy 38 Plainfield North 25 (Kari LeGrand 13 points, Janna Strodtman 7 rebounds); Timothy 21 Chicago Christian 32 (Liz Powers & Kari LeGrand 7 points, Lauren Troxel 7 rebounds); Timothy 24 Wheaton Academy 7 (Krista Wielard 8 points, Maggie Vander Woude 11 rebounds); Timothy 15 Nazareth Academy 30.(Lauren Troxel 6 points, Lauren Troxel & Amanda Dykema 8 rebounds).
12/20/07 - vs. Illiana - L-36-40
The sophomore girls lost a hard fought home PSL game to Illiana Christian by the score of 36 – 40. In a game that never saw a difference greater than the final margin of 4 points, Illiana made a key steal and free throws down the stretch to pull out a victory. Leading the Lady Trojans in scoring were Kari LeGrand with 13 and Janna Strodtman with 10. Amanda Dykema snared 7 rebounds while Liz Powers and Amanda each made 3 steals.
12/18/07 - vs. Proviso West - L-34-67
The sophomore girls suffered a 34 – 67 loss to a very good Proviso West team on Tuesday night. Proviso’s quickness and lightning fast break were more than the Lady Trojans could match. But to the Trojans credit, after being down 19 – 2 after the first quarter, they made some adjustments and played much more competitively for the rest of the game. The second half difference was only 6 points! Leading the scoring for the Trojans was Janna Strodtman with 12 points, including two treys. Amanda Dykema had 6 rebounds and Kari LeGrand dished out 3 assists.
12/14/07 -vs. Lisle - L-27-34
After 4 consecutive victories, the sophomore girls struggled against a strong Lady Lions team from Lisle. After only managing 2 points in the first quarter, they struggled through 3 quarters to get back into the game. They finally closed the gap in the 4th quarter, but it was too little too late. Kari LeGrand and Amanda Dykema led the team in scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively, but no one else managed more than 3. Amanda also led the team in rebounds with 6.
12/11/07 - vs. Walther Lutheran - W-34-26
The sophomore girls improved their record to 7 – 3 with a big conference road win, 34 – 26, over Walther Lutheran. The young Lady Trojans were led by Amanda Dykema with a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds. Janna Strodtman chipped in 8 points, including back to back treys in the 3rd quarter. Krista Wielard contributed 6 points off the bench as she again extended the floor in the 3rd quarter and cashed in a couple medium range field goals. Carie LeGrand racked up 5 assists as she hit several teammates for breakaway baskets and did a good job of handling the Bronco full-court pressure. It was an excellent team effort as the defense consistently denied Walther penetration off their spread offense.
12/8/07 - vs. St. Joseph - W-40-21
Timothy's sophomore girls traveled to St. Joseph for their 3rd road game of the week. Once again the Trojans put on a strong defensive effort and came away with a 40 – 21 victory. In a game that saw 10 of 11 players score, Kari LeGrand, Amanda Dykema and Liz Powers each scored 6 followed by Janna Strodtman and Marie Peters with 5. Amanda Dykema led the team with 6 caroms, followed by Lauren Troxel with 5. Kari LeGrand chipped in 4 assists and 2 steals.
12/7/07 - vs. The Latin School - W-34-28
The sophomore girls defeated the Latin School by the score of 34 – 28. Timothy got off to a good start with a 9 – 0 lead after the first quarter led by Liz Powers, who scored all 5 of her points. But the rest of the game was much closer as Latin began finding the range. The Lady Trojans were led by Lauren Troxel with 10 points on 5 field goals inside and Carie LeGrand who scored all 9 of her points in the second half including 5 – 6 from the line. Amanda Dykema pulled down 8 rebounds.
12/5/07 - vs. Fenton - W-40-35
The sophomore girls pulled out a thriller at Fenton with an exciting 40 - 35 victory in overtime. After the score was tied 35 – 35 at regulation; the Lady Trojans outscored Fenton 5 – 0 in the first overtime. Timothy was led by Amanda Dykema with 12 points including 4 – 4 from the charity stripe in the 4th quarter and overtime period; Kari LeGrand and Janna Strodtman each chipped in 7. Liz Powers collected 11 rebounds off of the many 3 point attempts by Fenton. It was an excellent effort with every member of the team contributing to the victory.
12/1/07 - vs. Luther North - L25-26
The sophomore girls suffered a disappointing loss at Luther North 25 – 26. After Timothy pulled out to a 7 – 1 lead in the first quarter, Luther North was able to put together a nice run to get within 1 at half-time. Neither team was able to take control in the 2nd half. Although Timothy played strong team defense, they committed numerous turnovers and struggled scoring. Carie LeGrand led the team with 7 points and 4 assists. Amanda Dykema had a strong game on the boards with 9 rebounds.
11/27/07 - vs. Nazareth Academy - L-30-50
After a tough first quarter that saw the Lady Trojans down 6 - 17, the game was played even for the next two quarters, but Nazareth was able to pull away down the stretch. Krista Wielard ignited the team with six points off the bench in the first quarter, and Liz Powers hit 2 three’s in the 3rd quarter to help get Timothy back in the game. Kari LeGrand contributed 4 assists. Once again there was balanced scoring by six players and strong rebounding by the front line.
11/20/07 - vs. Holy Trinity - W-29-12
The Lady Trojans built a 14 – 7 lead at half time on good defense and team play. The third quarter was all Timothy as they outscored Holy Trinity 13 – 1. Liz Powers let the team with 12 points including three 3-pointers in the third quarter. Krista Wielard added 10 as she again led the fast break with her hustle down the floor. Kari LeGrand had an excellent floor game with 5 assists and 3 steals, and the inside trio of Lauren Troxel, Maggie Vander Woude and Amanda Dykema controlled the boards.
11/17/07 - vs. Aurora Christian - L-36-34
In what turned out to be the championship game, Timothy fought extremely hard but came up short against Aurora Christian. Timothy led by 2 at the break, but when foul trouble forced them to go to a zone defense in the 3rd period, Aurora Christian responded by making several perimeter shots to take a 6 point lead into the 4th quarter. Although the Lady Trojans outscored A.C.H.S. 10 – 6 in the final stanza, they came up 2 points short as two starters had to leave the game with 5 fouls. Timothy had plenty of opportunities including numerous offensive rebound put-back chances, but poor shooting %, turnovers and foul trouble kept them from taking command of the game. Once again the scoring was spread over 7 players, something that should be a strength of the team all year. Maggie Vander Woude led the team with 4 rebounds and Karie LeGrand made 3 steals. Congratulations to the Lady Trojans for a fine effort and 2nd place finish in what will hopefully be the first annual TCHS Sophomore Invitational Tournament.
11/15/07 - vs. IC - W-26-12
Timothy defeated Immaculate Conception in a very good game. The key to their success was a great first half defensive effort as they held IC to only 2 points. Although IC managed 8 in the 3rd quarter, the Lady Trojans shut them down in the 4th with only 2 more points. Krista Wielard again extended the floor in transition and scored 9 while Lauren Troxel played very effectively inside with 9 points and 6 rebounds. Amanda Dykema and Maggie Vander Woude each added 3 caroms apiece.
11/14/07 - vs. IMSA W-56- 19
The sophomore girls started the season off in a good way with an easy victory over IMSA in the first annual Timothy Girls Sophomore Invitational Tournament. Kari LeGrand led all scorers with 14 points on 6 for 12 shooting, but all 8 players scored in the game. Kari also had 4 assists while Amanda Dykema led the team in rebounds with 4. Krista Wielard set the tempo by running the floor and creating numerous easy fast break opportunities. Liz Powers (2) and Janna Strodtman (1) started the game with 3 consecutive 3 point baskets and the Lady Trojans never looked back.
