2009 HS Summer Reading Program

Timothy Christian High School

Summer Reading Program Requirements for 2009-2010

Timothy Christian High School believes that reading is an important life skill that supports the overall mission and vision of Timothy Christian Schools, to graduate “academically prepared Christian disciples.”  To that end, the high school believes that reading practice is vital and should not be limited by the calendar of the academic year.

In order to promote reading and help students choose quality books, we are contining the Summer Reading Program, which requires each student to read two books during the summer.  We want our students to read well and to be well-read.  Having students read during the summer is one effective way to do that.

The first book is The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis.  All students in grades 9-12 will read this book.  Reading and discussing the same book will help build a sense of community around reading and will promote a school climate that encourages reading.

All students will take a quiz on this book on Wednesday, September 2nd. The quiz will consist of 20-25 objective questions and one essay question. The quiz will count as 10% of each student’s first quarter Bible grade.

For the second book, students should read a book of their choice. We have three guidelines for the second book choice. The book must be:

              1) parent-approved,

              2) grade-level appropriate, and

              3) a book that your son or daughter has not read before.

Below you will find a link to a list of titles (recommended by faculty as good summer reads but it is not required that the second book be from this list.) and the reading verification form.  The form is due on September 2. The second book will be counted as an assignment in English and will be weighted at 5% of the first quarter grade.

The second book must be selected by each student from the Summer Reading Bibliography compiled by the faculty. This list will be distributed directly to students.  (click here to view list)

Parents will verify the book has been read.  The verification form should be filled out and submitted for the book each student chooses from the Student Reading BibliographyThe verification form should be submitted on the first Wednesday of the school year (August 27) at the time the test is given for the first book.   This reading selection is counted as an assignment in English and will be weighted at 5% of the first quarter grade.
