Sophomore Volleyball – Metro Suburban Conference Champions!

The sophomore volleyball team ended their year with 4 straight victories over conference opponents.  After the Illiana tournament on October 8th, we traveled back to Illiana on Monday the 10th for our last away match of the year.  Because of the loss to Riverside-Brookfield the girls knew that this was an important game to keep them in control of the conference standings.  The Lady Trojans were able to overcome 9 service errors to win in 2 sets 25 – 21, 25 – 15.  Thanks to the shortened week due to CEA Convention, we played right away on Tuesday at home against Elmwood Park.  The girls didn’t win as convincingly as the first time (allowing only 8 points), but we still won easily 25 – 6, 25 – 13.

Our last 2 matches of the year were both home matches.  Tuesday (18th) we welcomed Glenbard South to our gym.  By winning this match, the team would ensure 1st place in conference.  The girls jumped out to an early lead in set one and held on to win 25 – 15.  Glenbard South, however, was not going to go away easily.  They came out and played inspired in the second set, opening a lead early and never letting it go.  We lost the second set 19 – 25.  The all-important third set was tight the whole way through.  Each team had 3 or 4-point leads, but saw them disappear thanks to tough play from the opposing team.  In the end, the Trojans came out on top because of tough defense and won an exciting third set 25 – 20.  For the last match of the year, Ridgewood came into our gym but never had a chance.  The girls wanted to end on a strong note and played hard to win 25 – 10, 25 – 7.

Congratulations to the sophomore volleyball team for being the Metro Suburban Conference Champions with an 11 – 1 record in conference play.  Also, congratulations for playing in the championship match of all three tournaments and ending with an overall record of 24 – 3.  Thanks for all the hard work and enjoyable season, ladies!

Up and down week ends with 2nd place finish at Illiana tournament

10/8/11

The sophomore volleyball team began the second round of conference play by playing at Riverside-Brookfield on Tuesday, October 4.  After a successful showing at the IC tournament, the girls were looking to keep their undefeated record in conference play intact.  However, Riverside-Brookfield played with something to prove, since we beat them handily the first time.  We never matched their intensity or confidence and lost in 2 sets 23 – 25, 21 – 25.  The girls got back on track on Thursday, easily beating Fenton 25 – 16, 25 – 8.

On Saturday we played in our third and final tournament of the year at Illiana.  For the third tournament in a row, we had the chance to play in the championship match after taking first place in our pool by beating Joliet Central (25 – 8, 25 – 12), Shepard (25 – 17, 25 – 15), and Tinley Park (25 – 10, 25 – 8).  In the championship match we played another old Private School League rival, Chicago Christian.  In the first set, we played well but still found ourselves down 15 – 20.  The team stormed back thanks to tough serves and strong defense to tie the game at 20 – 20.  Chicago Christian was able to muster up one last push, and we lost the first set 21 – 25.  The second set saw Chicago Christian take control from the beginning.  We struggled passing the ball and got stuck in a few rotations, allowing the Knights to go on a couple big runs.  In the end we lost the second set 13 – 25.  Congratulations to the sophomore team for playing in the championship game in every tournament this year.  The sophomore team is now 20 – 3 and 7 – 1 in conference.

Sophomore Volleyball gets second place at the Immaculate Conception tournament

10/1/11

The sophomore volleyball team returned to action on Tuesday the 27th traveling to Ridgewood to end the first round of conference play.  The Lady Trojans came out strong and imposed their will on the Raiders and won in 2 sets: 25 – 12, 25 – 12.  Thanks to that win, the sophomore team is undefeated in conference play (6 – 0) and in prime position as the second round of conference play begins this week.

We didn’t have match scheduled for Thursday, so we used that time to prepare for our upcoming weekend tournament at Immaculate Conception.  We always enjoy tournaments because it allows us to play nonconference teams that we wouldn’t normally play during the regular season.  We won our pool by defeating Immaculate Conception (27 – 26, 25 – 10), Westmont (25 – 9, 25 – 6), and St. Joseph (25 – 10, 25 – 18).

After a strong showing in pool play, we faced Regina Dominican High School in the championship.  The girls played extremely well in set one thanks to great defense and timely kills.  The girls fought hard to the end and won the first set 27 – 26.  In the second set, the girls came out firing on all cylinders and stretched their lead to 20 – 15.  However, Regina was able to make a push at the end tying the game up at 24 – 24, and we ultimately lost 24 – 26.  In the deciding set Timothy and Regina went back and forth taking control.  We found ourselves up 14 – 12 towards the end of the third set but were unable to finish for the second set in a row, giving up 4 straight points to lose 14 – 16.  The girls played extremely well all day, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.  Thanks to all the fans that came to support us.  We always appreciate the dedicated cheering section.  The Sophomore team is now 16 – 1 and 6 – 0 in conference play.

Sophomore Volleyball stays undefeated with wins against Illiana and Glenbard South

9/23/11

Illiana came to visit on Tuesday afternoon as the sophomore team was hoping to keep their undefeated record intact.  The girls had to play with a new lineup for the first time because 2 of our players were pulled up to the varsity team over the weekend.  As a result, we lost the first set 15 – 25 working out the kinks and getting used to the new lineup.  In the second set we began to put it together, but we still found ourselves down 17 – 22.  Thanks to a strong rally and good serving we were able to win the second set 25 – 23.  After winning the second set, we had all the momentum entering the third and jumped out to an early lead behind strong passing and defense.  We won the third set 25 – 17.  Thanks to all that came out to support our girls as we had the biggest crowd of the year for the biggest game of the year.

Thursday afternoon we traveled to Glenbard South.  The girls seemed a little out of it all afternoon, but pulled out a win in two sets (25 – 21, 25 – 21).  It must have been a hangover from the highly emotional game on Tuesday.  Even though we were a little down, we still managed to play well together and take advantage of mistakes made by Glenbard South.  The sophomore volleyball team is now 12 – 0 and 5 – 0 in conference play.  Keep up the good work, ladies!

Sophomore Volleyball – Another strong week

9/17/11

The sophomore volleyball team had another strong week with two wins against Fenton and Elmwood Park.  We played Fenton at home on Tuesday (September 13).  Both sets saw the girls get out to a slow start as Fenton was hanging around in both sets until about 7 – 7.  After a sluggish start, the girls started to pull away thanks to a great effort on the defensive end.  By keeping the ball in play on Fenton’s attacks the girls were able to frustrate the Lady Bison and win 25 – 13, 25 – 14.

On September 15 we travelled to Elmwood Park for our third conference match of the year.  Elmwood Park did not put up much of a fight as we won 25 – 6, 25 – 2.  This week is an exciting week as we take our undefeated streak into matches against Illiana (home on Tuesday) and Glenbard South (away on Thursday).  Let’s get a huge crowd out for Tuesday’s home match against Illiana and show them how we support our teams!

Sophomore Volleyball – Undefeated to start the season

9/9/11

The Sophomore volleyball team has had a very successful 2 weeks to begin the season.  Our first match of the year, we travelled to Westmont and won thanks to strong swings and defense.  We won in two sets taking the first set 25 – 17 and the second set 25 – 22.  Two days later we opened up at home playing an old Private School League rival Wheaton Academy.   The girls came out fast and won the first set 25 – 15.  Another strong effort from on the defensive end led to a 25 – 18 win in set 2.

On September 3 we played in a 10 team tournament at Aurora Central Catholic High School.  We took first place in our pool after beating Immaculate Conception, Aurora Christian, and Newark.  We ended up getting a lot of rest during the day because one of the teams in our pool didn’t show.  After waiting for the other pool to finish play, we faced Matea Valley in the championship match.  The girls put forth another great effort winning the championship in 2 sets.  A long, but rewarding day kept the sophomore team’s undefeated streak alive, both in sets and matches.

After the long Labor Day weekend, we returned to play Latin School and Riverside Brookfield.  We had a sluggish outing at Latin on Wednesday, winning the first set 25 – 8, losing the second 15 – 25, and winning the third 25 – 12.  We served well, but serve receive and defense left a lot to be desired.  Unfortunately we didn’t have any time to practice before our first conference match of the year against Riverside Brookfield on Thursday.  The girls, however, seemed to get all the bad play out on Wednesday and came out strong winning the first set 25 – 4 playing well both defensively and offensively.  RB came out ready to go in set 2 and gave us a challenge, but we ended up putting them away in 2 winning 25 – 16 in the second set.  Thanks to fans and parents for all the support so far this year.  Go Trojans!
