This past weekend, the Timothy Mock Trial team continued their dynasty with another top-three finish at the state championship tournament.  The team traveled to the University of Illinois at Springfield for the Mock Trial State Championship, ultimately claiming 3rd place. The 2007-2008 season marks the eleventh time in the last twelve years that Timothy has finished in the top three at the state competition.

This year’s case involved a high school bully charged with aggravated battery for breaking a fellow student’s arm.  Timothy competed against ST. Charles North and Hubbard in the first two rounds.

Timothy advanced to the final round of eight, in which each team has one more trial.  Timothy played Boylan Catholic from Rockford in an amazing final trial.

Coach Scott Roelofs said, “It was one of the best trials I have ever seen. Boylan had tremendous team and we one of the best performances of the year against the toughest team we faced all year.”  At the close of the competition, Timothy was awarded 3rd place, Boylan was awarded 2nd place, and Highland Park (a team that Timothy had previously beaten) was awarded first.

Timothy’s team was made up of seniors- Heather Hooker, Leanna Johnson, James VanDenBerg, Juniors Caroline Hays, Dan Denby, Ibie Hart, Amanda Rychtanek, Corey VanDyk, sophomore Olivia Doig, and Freshman Taylor Hoogendoorn, teacher Scott Roelofs, and attorneys Cathy McNeil Stein and Kirsten Hauser.

This year’s achievement was especially satisfying because none of the Timothy students had ever been a starter until this year.

Congratulations to all team members and coaches!

Last Friday the Mock Trial team took part in the DuPage County MockTrial competition. There were 28 teams involved, including many of the best teams in the state. At the end of the day, Timothy's team finished in first place.

Timothy’s A team played Hinsdale South and St. Charles East. In the St. Charles trial, Timothy received a perfect score from one of the judges, a feat that had never been achieved in County Mock Trial history. Timothy scored high enough in their trials to compete in the championship round against Glenbard East, last year’s state champ.

In a tense, hard fought trial, Timothy was declared champion. Team members include Heather Hooker, James VanDenBerg, Leanna Johnson, Caroline Hays, Corey VanDyk, Dan Denby, Ibie Hart, Olivia Doig, and Taylor Hoogendoorn.

Timothy’s B team, made up of all freshmen and one sophomore, also performed very well, finishing in the middle of the pack.
