2008 Elementary School Geo Bee

Sixteen grade school contestants took the stage on Tuesday, December 9 to participate in this year's Geography Bee.  If you've ever been channel surfing and seen the National Geography Bee finalists, usually on PBS, these local Geo Bees is where it all begins..

The first catergory included questions about general U.S. geography and the students had a multiple choice answer.   In Round 3, the students no longer had a 50-50 chance of getting correctly as no possible answers were provided.  By round 6, the group was whittled down to four contestants.  At the end of this round, all but one answered the question incorrectly, securing that person a spot in the final two.  A few more questions knocked out the other two players, leaving two contestants for the final round.

The final two went head to head for eight questions until finally, when asked where the recent pirate attacks have been taking place, only one had the correct answer, which is the Indian Ocean.

Congratulations to our first place winner, 6th grader Phil Troxel, and our runner-up, 5th grader Joy Gregorio.  Phil received a DK World Atlas and Joy received a book 501 Must-Visit Destinations In addition, both Phil and Joy will compete in the MS Geography Bee on December 16. Nicely done!
