Care Convention - 2010

The Care Convention is no ordinary day for the 7th grade class. There is no math, social studies, science or language arts classes taught that day. The main responsibilities the students have is to have fun, listen to powerful speakers and participate in their small groups.

Once again, New Leaf Resources partnered with Mrs. Andra Hersey and the seventh grade teachers to coordinate the annual Care Convention, held on Friday, March 10.  High school students provided rousing shouts of encouragement every time the seventh graders entered a room.  They also performed skits that were funny, but held deep meanings.  Rachel Ties kicked off the day with a message reminding students that they were children of God and challenged them to reflect on the question: “Are you happy being you?”  Latrice Oglesby used her own personal life to discuss grief and the many different ways we experience it though out life.  And Mr. Hersey rounded out the lineup of speakers, sharing his thoughts on what it means to wear different masks in our lives.

In between speakers and skits, students had the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings during small group time.  After lunch, relay races provided the perfect way to burn off some energy, as did the impromptu dance party.  At the very end of the day, both high school and middle school students came together as a community to worship.  As the voices joined together in song, it was evident that much had been learned and that lives had been touched.
