ES Spelling Bee - January 12, 2010

This year’s Spelling Bee was the year of  “firsts.”  It was the first year the moderator had to use the “emergency” spelling list because our students' abilities surpassed the standard list.  It was also the first time a 3rd grade student has placed in the top two.  It took eleven rounds to reduce the twenty-two very good spellers down to the final two.

This year’s participants were: Matt Azuh, Nicholas Bashor, Kairra Brazley, Grace Butuyan, McKenna Byrne, Rachelle Clousing, Andrew Crawley, Caleb DeHaan, Grace Files, Joy Gregorio, Rebecca Hammond, Brett Harbaugh-Clark, Audrey Huizenga, Daniel Kuiper, Emma Lubben, Isaac Nunez, Anna Rubicz, Jaszmine Simmons, Ellie Wiener, Christopher Wiper, Melissa Young and Alex Zebutis.

Spelling Bee moderator Mrs. Stein had to remind the audience to hold in their gasps when students successfully spelled very difficult words like magniloquent and obsecration.  Alex Zebutis (6th grade) and Christopher Wiper (3rd grade) outlasted the other students to reach the championship round.  Alex won by correctly spelling two words after Christopher missed one.  Both Alex and Christopher will join the middle school bee on Thursday, January 14. This will determine the school winner who will go on to represent Timothy in the next level of competition.  Congratulations to Alex, Christopher and all the participants!
