Elementary School Spelling Bee
Did you know that Timothy's Annual Spelling Bees are part of a much larger competition put on by SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee each year? Our Bees are the first step in a very long and competitive road that culminates each June at the finals in Washington D.C.
This year's Bee featured 18 of our 5th & 6th graders who qualifed by getting at least 43 words correct out 50 in the preliminary test given the week before. Mrs. Stein acted as moderator and read the words to our participants. The rules decided by SCRIPPS dictate that one mispelled word and the contestant is out. Our students did very well and went quite a few rounds before it was narrowed down to eight spellers.
The next round took out four students leaving a final four. And then finally, it was down to two participants who went several rounds spelling difficult words perfectly. Then, one missed a letter. This opened the door for the other partipant who then needed to spell two words correctly, which he did. Congratulations to Winner Devin May (6th grade) and Runner-Up Ana DeMey (6th grade) for an awesome job and a fun competition to watch!
Both Devin and Ana won a gift certificate to a nearby book shop and Devin also received a year subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica on-line. They will now go on to compete in the MIddle School Bee which will be held January 15. The winner of that Bee will continue on to the Private School Regionals.
Well done to all our participants!
