Homecoming Ping Pong Tournament
On Saturday, January 23 over 40 Ping Pong enthusiasts showed up at 9 am at the Timothy Christian Schools middle gym ready to do battle. All range of ages and experience levels were well represented. Elementary age kids and senior citizens alike all grabbed a paddle and competed for the coveted first place trophy. Nine ping pong tables were donated for the weekend from members of the Timothy community and all were needed as this group enthusiastically commenced play.
Both the recreational and the advanced levels provided good competition leading to the final match for the overall winner. The recreational bracket culminated with a Father Daughter duel that would allow the winner to meet past Timothy intramural champion Herm Tammeling in the finals. Dave VanKampen and Erin VanKampen (the only female to participate) battled it out with Dave emerging as the victor after all the smoke had settled. Herman once again showed why he held the title in ’78 by defeating Dave to capture the top spot in his bracket. Congratulations Herm!
The Advanced division played throughout the morning and into the afternoon with matches becoming more intense as the day progressed. Players gathered around the brackets taped to the wall and studied the possible matchup to come. While every match played was competitive, the intensity of play escalated as players were eliminated. After MANY close games, the finals match was set between Alum Dan Roelofs (Class of 2007) and current Timothy student Ryan Hoff. Dan, having lost one match earlier, needed to defeat Ryan twice while Ryan only needed one victory to clinch. While other matches that day were exciting, this one proved to be a battle of titans. Dan eventually prevailed by winning both matches 3 games to 2 and both fifth games were within 3 points. Congratulations to Dan, who now holds the number one ranking for the Timothy Homecoming ping pong community.
