Homecoming Weekend - 2009

The lights, the glamour, the games, the crowds, the music....Homecoming 2009!  The Mighty Trojans met their opponent Aurora Christian in three nailbiting games all which found the Trojans victorious.  After the Sophomore Boys' game, the lights were dimmed and the crowd went wild as this year's Homecoming Court was presented which included:

Freshmen: Linnea Venhousen and Aaron Snoeyink

Sophomores: Taylor Bryant, Lauren Couture, Troy Ellens, and Corey Phillip

Juniors: Rita Clousing, Julia Pattison, Audie Smith, Daihee Cho, Moonsu Kang, Josh VanZeelt

Seniors: Katie Dirkse, Caroline Hays, Jacquelyn Iwema, Becky Kim, Maxwell Baumbach, Justin Groenewold, Thomas Huiner, and Jon Voss

Last year's Queen Candace Wieringa and Mark Zylstra, standing in for last year's King Joel Sytsma, handed over their titles to Katie Dirkse and Thomas Huiner as reigning Queen and King.

The Trojans were introduced to a standing ovation and the game began.  At half-time, the Cheerleaders took the floor with a flawless routine that included many new and impressive stunts.  The Poms and Dads then took us back to the 70's and 80's with a Michael Jackson medley that really was a "Thriller!"  Some of those dads can do an impressive "moonwalk! "

During the break between 3rd & 4th quarter, the crowd was entertained by the Varsity Girls' dance routine.  This year, they were joined by their Coach Ryan Dekoekkoek who can apparently dance AND coach with "All the SIngle Ladies."!

Saturday morning, the Alumni Board hosted a Ping-Pong Tournament.  Please click here for complete coverage of that event.

And, Saturday evening our students glammed up and stepped out for the annual Homecoming Dance, held at the Ashton Place.  Click here to see photos.

Coaches' Reports on Homecoming Games

Freshman Boys

The Eagles came out hot in the first quarter netting 4 3-pointers and jumped out to a 23-7 lead, but we hung in there (Chris Ridolphi...9 points in the quarter) and closed the quarter on an 8-point run to trail by 8.  We narrowed the gap to 6 at halftime and 3 at the end of the third quarter.  We continued the comeback and took our only lead of the game with about 12 seconds to play...and held on for the 54-52 victory.  Ridolphi finished with 14 points.  Tyler VanderBrug added 10 (6 in the final period) and Matt Robinson 9.  Alex Sweatman did a fine job on the boards and also chipped in with 7 points.  Final score in favor of the Trojans was 54-52.

Sophomore Boys

On Friday in front of a packed homecoming crowd the Trojans defeated PSL conference rival Aurora Christian by the score of 44-37.  The contest was close throughout and saw the Trojans trailing by 1 heading into the final quarter.  The Trojans who had played solidly throughout the hard fought, tightly contested game showed its heart and will to win by holding the Eagles to 4 4th quarter points to seal the win.  The Trojans balanced attack was again spearheaded by Mike Pizzelo.  Pizzelo, the type of player who makes everyone around him better, led the Trojans with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals.  Pizzelo coupled with hard nose defender Chad Vos to shut down the Eagles top scorers in the 2nd half.  Big men Nathan Boot and Matt Morrison both continue to show great improvement and contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Nathan Ziegler, who plays hard every minute of every game, has increased his offensive contributions both in terms of taking and making key shots down the stretch and making good decisions with and taking good care of the basketball.

Varsity Boys

The Trojans played in front of a packed house on Friday vs. Aurora Christian. There were many Homecoming festivities and an entertaining game. Aurora Christian came out with some hot shooting and moved in front 9-3. The Trojans were very tight with all the excitement and could not capitalize on opportunities early. They fought back to lead 17-16 at the quarter. Some outstanding play and career highs by Rob Stein (17 pts,12 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists) brought the Trojans to half time with the lead 36-27. The Trojans were able to build the lead in the 3rd quarter to 14 pts, but the Eagles would not quit and cut the gap to 48-43 at the end of the 3rd. In the 4th quarter, Aurora Christian got within 3 pts, but the Trojans were able to make some crucial baskets and finish off the game by winning 69-58. Peter Tameling (12 pts, 6 rebounds), Rob White (9 pts, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists), Reggie Greenwood (10 pts, 4 assists) all had good games. Some strong play off the bench by Kordel Smith (7 pts, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists), and Justin Peeples (6 pts, 4 rebounds) was crucial in the victory. The players and coaching staff would like to thank all the fans and especially the RED ZONE for their tremendous energy tonight. The support was truly amazing. The Trojans move to 12-5, 4-0 on the season.
