2011 Care Convention
Thursday, November 10th was no ordinary day for the 7th grade class. There were no math, social studies, science or language arts classes taught that day. The main responsibilities the students had were to have fun, listen to powerful messages from speakers and participate in their small groups. New Leaf Resources partnered with Mrs. Hersey and the seventh grade teachers to coordinate the annual Care Convention. Timothy Christian High school students provided rousing shouts of encouragement every time the seventh graders entered a room. They also lead small groups and performed skits that were funny, but held deep meanings. Mark Morris kicked off the day with a message about making choices and looking around to see what people are influencing you. Cathy Schurman, who was a counselor at Timothy Christian years ago, returned to share a relevant message about the power of our words and our calling as Christians to treat one another with kindness and respect. Mr. Hersey rounded out the lineup of speakers, sharing an important reminder of God’s desire to enter into the chaos of life and bring comfort. Listeners were challenged to cry out to God in the midst of confusion and pain.
In between speakers and skits, 7th grade students had the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings during small group time. It was meaningful time with caring high school leaders and parent volunteers. After lunch, students participated in game show activities lead by the 7th grade teachers. It provided the perfect way to burn off some energy. It was an amazing day filled with emotional and spiritual learning and healing. God was faithful in providing an experience that unified the 7th grade community and laid a foundation to build off of the rest of the school year.
