Results of ES Spelling Bee
Do you fancy yourself a pretty good speller? Think about spelling a word out loud, on a stage, in front of an audience of your peers with a spotlight focused on you standing at a microphone. How do you think you would do? It's quite a challenge!
Seventeen of our 5th-6th graders accepted that challenge in the first round of TC's Scripps Spelling Bee. This is the first step in the competition that could land the stellar speller in Washington D.C. in the finals.
The students who qualified for this year's ES Bee were: Sebastian Bravo,
Nathan Brown, Jillian Bury, Hannah Forrider, James Graham, Sofia Grove, Ryan Grunsten,
Valerie Hoekstra, Austin Hoogendoorn,
Ellie Jarzombek, Nick Johnson, Olivia Schuringa, Rachel Stoll,
Stephania Stravropoulos,
William Terpstra,
Tracy Westra and Nathaniel Yurschak.
The Bee is a single elimination competition, meaning one misspelled word and the contestant is out. We experienced numerous rounds where no one was eliminated. Round 12 found us with three spellers and then we were down to our two finalists, Sebastian Bravo (5th grade) & Nathaniel Yurschak (6th grade). They went back and forth for quite a few rounds until Nathaniel missed a word followed by Sebastian who spelled the next two words correctly, crowning him the champion and Nathaniel as runner-up.
Both gentlemen will go on to compete in the TC Middle School Spelling be, which will be held next Thursday, January 19 at 1:30 pm in the Huizenga auditorium.
Congratulations Sebastian, Nathaniel and all our contestants!
