VFW Honors Middle School Students

On Sunday, December 18th the VFW honored some of our 8th grade students and their parents by hosting a pizza party in their honor. The event was held at the VFW Post in Villa Park.  In September, all 8th grade students were required to write an essay explaining why patriotism is still important today.  The essays were given to the VFW where they were judged for content and if the student showed knowledge of the subject matter.  The following students were invited because their essays were chosen:  (Pictured) Jackson Jarzombek, Joe Bootsma, Alex Zebutis, Isaac Nunez, Adam Postma, Abby Groters, Ellie Wiener, Christa DeJager, Anna Rubicz, Chelsea Rodriquez, (not pictured) Declan Brown, Tyler LeGrand, and Megan Middel.

From the essays submitted the Veterans chose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.  Timothy did very well and Christa DeJager received 1st place while Joe Bootsma and Jackson Jarzombek tied for 3rd place.  All three students received a monetary award and will be invited to another dinner in late January where their essay's will go up against students from other VFW Post in the state of Illinois where they could possibly win more.  The Patriot's Pen Essay Competition is a national contest ending some time in May in Washington D.C.  Congratulations to all the students chosen!
