The week of November 26, 2007

A weekly email newsletter from Timothy Christian Schools to keep you informed, involved and invited.

Our Mission: “Serving God and His people, Timothy Christian Schools develops academically prepared Christian disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the world.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Tithing, of course, is the idea of giving ten percent to the church.  You might argue that that’s Old Testament law and we’re not bound by it anymore.  But what we are bound by—at least, what our love for our God should be driving us to—is the principle that we give generously, that we give regularly, and that we give off the top, from the very best that we have.” --James R. Van Tholen in “Where All Hope Lies”

TIMOTHY REIGNS AS MATH TRIATHLON CHAMP

FRESHMAN BOYS TAKE 1ST PLACE IN THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT

The freshman team won two games on Friday and one on Saturday to claim the championship of the Driscoll Catholic Thanksgiving tournament.

Their first tourney victory on Friday came against a scrappy team of Tigers from Elmwood Park.  The final score was TC 36 – Elmwood Park 19.  Troy Ellens led the team in scoring with 12 points and grabbed 7 errant shots.  Mike Pizzello had 6 steals and 5 assists to go along with his 9 points.  Nathan Ziegler chipped in with 8 points.

In the second game of the day, we jumped out to a 34-6 halftime lead…extending that to 48-14 at the end of the 3rd quarter.  The Lisle Lions staged a furious 4th quarter comeback, but we held on to record a 52-40 victory.  Pizzello led the team in scoring with 14 points while again helping out on the boards with 5 rebounds.  Peter Matthews contributed 13 points…including being a perfect 3-3 from beyond the three-point arc.  Nate Ziegler added 9 points.

Our Saturday game was against Driscoll Catholic (also 2-0 at the time).  After being knotted up 9-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Highlanders took a 17-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.  Timothy played very good team defense in the 2nd half holding Driscoll to 9 points, while scoring 22.  Final score TC 37 – Driscoll 26.  Troy Ellens had 15 points and 8 rebounds; Mike Pizzello added 10 points and 6 rebounds.

CONGRESSMAN PETER ROSKAM VISITS 8TH GRADE

Our 8th grade students welcomed a special guest on Monday morning as Congressman Peter J. Roskam came and spoke to our students.  He immediately engaged the students with a fictitious proposed bill that 12 year olds should be allowed to drive.  He explained what would happen to that bill, should it pass through the House and Senate and land up at the desk of the President.  He then spoke about being a Christian and how that influences his actions and voting.  Students were encouraged to ask questions of the Congressman.  They asked intelligent questions such as what was his view on the war in Iraq, are there other Christians in the House, how does he feel about politicians being criticized and how he got his start in the political field.  Mrs. Judy Sytsma asked him for specific ways we could pray for him and his family and then closed in prayer.  A group shot was taken and Congressman Roskam then graciously signed many autographs.  It was a time the students (and staff!) won’t forget!

DID YOU KNOW. . .

-that Timothy class of ’87 alum Brian McCarthy works for Peter Roskam as District Director?

-that ES/MS photo retakes are Tuesday, November 27?

-that the class of ’82 held their reunion this past Saturday?

-that last Monday Timothy parent Mary Sytsma presented a Power Point presentation to the sixth graders about her work with the Gwaimen Center (ministry to children and women with AIDS), and gave them several ideas about service/ministry projects?  This is yet another way to encourage our students to think how they can make “Our Father’s World” a better place and tie into our theme.

-that there will be a HS Pep Rally this Friday at 2:30 pm.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

John went to a psychiatrist: "I've got problems. Every time I go to bed, I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy."

"Just put yourself in my hands for one year," said the psychiatrist. "Come talk to me three times a week, and we should be able to get rid of those fears."

"How much do you charge?" John asked warily.

"Each visit is $150," replied the doctor.

"Well, I'll sleep on it. If I can."

Six months later the doctor bumped into John on the street: "Why didn't you ever come to see me about those fears you were having?"

"Well, one hundred and fifty bucks a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A friend at work cured me for nothing. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought myself a new pickup!"

"Is that so?! And how, may I ask, did your friend cure you?"

"He told me to cut the legs off the bed!"
