SMARTBOARD MOVEMENT GAINS MOMENTUM

The Timothy SmartBoard movement keeps gaining momentum.  Recently, Chicago Parent Magazine did a feature on Timothy and a couple other leading Chicago area schools on the cutting edge of this movement. See the “New on the Timothy Website” link above to access the information.

8TH GRADE VISITATION DAY

Timothy's second annual 8th grade visitation day was an exciting event. 120 students (81 Timothy 8th graders and 39 8th graders from other schools) visited the high school during the course of a school day. But for these 8th graders, the day was anything but normal.

High school student volunteers lead the 14 groups in a video scavenger hunt, a tour of the high school (including opportunities to sit in on high school classes), and the high school extra curricular fair.  This fair, a student favorite, included over 50 more Timothy high school volunteers running fun, interactive display tables that represent the many different opportunities offered to high school students at Timothy. The Visitation Day ended with a pizza lunch and the gift of the coveted “I (heart) TC t-shirts.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH PROGRAM: “IMAGINE ME”

The Timothy Christian Black History Committee invites the entire Timothy Christian community to join its members on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at 7 p.m., in the high school auditorium to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans of the past and present and to rejoice in the coming together of Timothy's diverse population.  This year, the production is in the form of a drama that highlights various periods in African American history.  The production includes performances by elementary, middle and high school students.  The evening promises to be both entertaining and enlightening!  Please join us!

CHESS TEAM MAKES THE RIGHT MOVES AGAIN

Although the Timothy Christian Chess Team was a little shorthanded to compete for team awards, there were strong individual performances, as seven out of 12 team members captured trophies at the Midwest Scholastic Class Championships held at Hadley Junior High School in Glen Ellyn last Saturday.

The Elementary (4th-5th graders) Team was particularly strong as all five players posted winning records.  Garrett Karpman was top scorer with 4 wins in 5 games, capturing a Section Champion Trophy.  Glen Kleinschmidt captured a Section 3rd Place Trophy with 3 points and Quinn Karpman picked up a Section 4th Place Trophy with 3.5 points.

The Junior High (6th-8th graders) Team's top scorer was Tim Huizinga (3 wins out of 4 - Section 4th Place Trophy).  Charlie Miller, Elly Evenhouse and Kyle Groters earned Section 5th Place Trophies.  The tournament drew 354 players.

The team is coached by Timothy parent Todd Barre and faculty advisor Mike Engbers.  The team wraps up its season at the Knights of the Forest Scholastic in Des Plaines on February 23.

TUITION TAX CREDIT

Tax time is upon us again.  Did you know that Timothy Christian School parents can receive up to a $500 tax credit because of the tuition that they pay?  You can do this by completing a “Receipt for Qualified Education Expenses” form which can be downloaded from the following website: tax.illinois.gov.  Go to the left side and find “Forms/Publications.”  Go down to near the bottom of the page under the heading “Other Tax Related Forms/Publications.”  Look for “School Form”.  Choose “Form”.  This form indicates that it should be completed by the school.  However, some of the information is not available to us (e.g. social security numbers).  Timothy Christian Schools can provide a receipt with all the tuition amounts for each of your children which you could then transfer to this form.* You can then attach our receipt to the form.  Please note that you must complete the ED Worksheet in the Form IL-1040 instructions to figure the amount of your credit.  If you have any questions, feel free to call the business office at 630-833-4616.

*Timothy Christian Schools will not automatically send you a receipt for your 2007 payments.  You can request one by calling or stopping in at the business office or e-mailing Lisa Zylstra at zylstral@timothychristian.com.  The receipt can be mailed, sent home with a student, or e-mailed directly to you.

TIMOTHY-FRENCH STUDENT EXCHANGE HOUSING NEEDED

We have 12 Timothy students heading to Lyon, France on June 17-30, but first 19 French students are coming here from June 4-17.  We still need housing for 2 boys and 3 girls. They are all around 14 years old and have been taking English since 3rd grade.  We need parents of high school or middle school students to host them.  With our Timothy students, they will take 4 days of trips around Chicagoland as a group, but in the remaining time they hope just to live in a normal American home to observe the culture and do what the host kids normally do. If you’d like to help or have questions to ask before deciding, contact Deb Van Prooyen at vanprooyend@timothychristian.com or (630) 620-0977.

EVERYBODY COUNTS WEEK IS HERE

The Everybody Counts program is scheduled for this week.  Everybody Counts is a parent-led curriculum for students in grades K-6.  This innovative program is designed to help our elementary school students gain a better understanding of disabling conditions and create a climate in which we all feel at-ease with one another’s differences. “Everybody Counts” is organized and presented by parent volunteers.

PARENT EDUCATION NIGHT

The Early Childhood Education Committee at Timothy Christian Schools is hosting a Parent-Education Night on the topic of Sensory Integration Disorder. The ability to process information taken in by our senses is a key factor in children’s development. Speaker, Kathy Hirtzer, an occupational therapist from Elim Christian School will be presenting more information on how to become better observers of children’s senses and how to best help them process information to succeed at home and in the classroom. This event will be held this Tuesday, February 12 beginning at 7:00 in the grade school library.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

--that there is no school next Monday due to President’s Day?

--that the Elementary School will have a Black History Assembly this Wednesday at 12:50 pm?

--that CYT (Christian Youth Theater)  is performing the play “Godspell” this weekend in Timothy’s Huizenga Auditorium?  The play features three of Timothy’s very own: Abby Newell, Marissa Allen and Laura Thoresen.  “Godspell” is the musical adaptation of the greatest story ever told, taken from the book of Matthew.  Incorporating street rhythms, modern dance and powerful music, the message of the Gospel comes alive in a fresh innovative way.  The show runs about two hours with one intermission.  The play is recommended for ages 8 and up.  Visit their website for ticket information at http://www.cytchicago.org

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A woman was working in her yard with the weed whacker, when she accidentally cut off the tail of her cat.

She ran screaming into the house, and told her husband, wondering what to do.

He replied calmly, "Get the cat, and the tail, and we'll take them to Wal-Mart."

She was incredulous. "How could that possibly help?" she asked.

"Well," he replied, "they're the world's largest retailer."
