The week of March 10, 2008

A weekly email newsletter from Timothy Christian Schools to keep you informed, involved and invited.

Our Mission: “Serving God and His people, Timothy Christian Schools develops academically prepared Christian disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the world.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

The art of praying, as we grow, is really the art of learning to waste time gracefully—to be simply the clay in the hands of the potter. This may sound easy—too easy to be true—but it is really the most difficult thing we ever learn to do . . . This is the real reason why so few of us ever come, in this life, to the full experience of God’s love for us. - Thomas H. Green in “When the Well Runs Dry”

MIDDLE SCHOOL DRAMA

Middle School Drama presented ”It was a Dark and Stormy Night”, a shameless spoof on those stage and screen classics of the 20’s and 30’s.  It was performed last Thursday and Friday in the Huizenga Auditorium. Congratulations to the cast, crew, and director team of Judd Rinsema, Shawna Mudde, and Judy Sytsma for a thoroughly entertaining performance.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

Fifteen Timothy students competed in the Science Olympiad Regional Competition at the College of Du Page on Saturday, March 8.  The Science Olympiad Team included three sixth grade students: Riley DeHaan, Victoria Hart, Sam Sticha, eight seventh grade students: Kate Berens, Tim Huizinga, Kurt Munson, Bonnie VanDyk, Kyle Groters, Andrew Groenewold, Brendan Biesboer, Jason Kuiper, four eighth grade students: Emily Huizenga, Linnea Venhousen, Kelly Powers, Mike Hennel, and one alternate: 6th grade student Grace Berens.

This team of students competed in 23 events and finished overall in tenth place; impressive for a first time team! The team did incredibly well, exhibiting terrific attitudes and team spirit.  To a student, they were respectful, responsible, happy representatives of Timothy Christian Schools.  These students gave up many, many afternoons to prepare, and they were all at COD for nearly ten hours on Saturday.  The team was coached by Ann Bakker and Michelle Berens with a huge amount of assistance and support from many parents and teachers.

Timothy students received medals in nine of the events:

Junkyard Challenge:                     1st place – Jason Kuiper (Grace Berens)

Trajectory:                                2nd place – Andrew Groenewold, Emily Huizenga

Scrambler:                                 2nd place – Sam Sticha, Tori Hart

Anatomy:                                    3rd place – Riley DeHaan, Kyle Groters

Rocks and Minerals                      3rd place – Jason Kuiper, Kurt Munson

Simple Machines:                         4th place – Kate Berens, Bonnie VanDyk

Road Scholar:                             4th place – Andrew Groenewold, Bonnie VanDyk

Crave the Wave:                                     4th place – Andrew Groenewold, Tori Hart

Tower Building:                           5th place – Mike Hennel, Brendan Biesboer

Look for pictures of this event on our website later this week.

POSITION OPENING: TIMOTHY CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE DIRECTOR

At the February meeting of the Board of Directors approval was given for the development of a K-6 After School Child Care program to be in place by August, 2008. Depending on the level of family interest, there would be a possibility for a Before School Child Care program as well.

The first and most important step in this development is the hiring of an outstanding candidate to direct this self-sustaining program. Experience in developing or working in a similar program is preferred, but not required.

The future director of this program should be well organized, have a love of children, have excellent communication skills for interacting with parents, and be self-motivated to shape and manage a child-care program.

Qualified candidates should send a resume to:

Dr. Tim Hoeksema

Enjoy Worlds of Food as you travel to several ethnic food stations representing different countries.  This easy style allows for culture tasting.  And to add to your personal enjoyment, professional chefs will prepare your food to order.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A woman answered her front door and saw a little boy holding a list. "Ma'am," he explained, "I'm on a scavenger hunt, and I still need three grains of wheat, a pork-chop bone and a piece of used carbon paper to earn a dollar."

"Wow," the woman replied. "Who sent you on such a challenging hunt?"

"My babysitter's boyfriend."
