The week of April 21, 2008

A weekly email newsletter from Timothy Christian Schools to keep you informed, involved and invited.

Our Mission: “Serving God and His people, Timothy Christian Schools develops academically prepared Christian disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the world.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“The world is overcome not through destruction, but through reconciliation. Not ideals, nor programs, nor conscience, nor duty, nor responsibility, nor virtue, but only God's perfect love can encounter reality and overcome it. Nor is it some universal idea of love, but rather the love of God in Jesus Christ, a love genuinely lived, that does this. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer in “Meditations on the Cross”

“A NIGHT OUT FOR TIMOTHY”

THE TIMOTHY CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS BENEFIT & AUCTION

Saturday night’s Benefit and Auction was a wonderful event for many reasons. It was a wonderful community builder, it celebrated Christian education at Timothy, and focused our attention on the wonderful things God is doing at Timothy and how, together, we can build a deeper community of support. The event raised $92,000 which will go toward the purchase and installation of a new playground for the elementary school.  The live auction portion of the program generated $45,000 alone. Many thanks to all who contributed and attended, and special thanks to the 2008 Benefit Committee: Maribeth Anderson, Bethany De Haan, Michelle Grafton, Flory Hoving, Barb Kleinschmidt, Sue Lubben, Sherry Miller, Carrie Tazelaar, Jennifer Nicholson, and Jill Veenstra

SAVE THE DATE!

In fact, reserve the entire night! Wednesday May 28 is the night of the Annual Society Meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Huizenga Auditorium. It will also be a night of institutional celebration and thanksgiving. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria Timothy will host an Open House for six retiring teachers. Please join us for light refreshments and an opportunity to thank Marge Bogdalek, Ruth Harkema, Judd and Linda Rinsema, and Marve and Phyllis Wolsterstorff for their combined 160 years of service to Timothy Christian Schools. We have been truly blessed by their commitment to God’s work here.

ACADEMIC GOOD NEWS FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL

Principal Clyde Rinsema reports that the following students have met the requirement to enter the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.  This means that they are among the top 50,000 highest scoring of over 1.5 million who took the PSAT. We will find out if they are commended students (top 34,000) or semi-finalists (top 16,000) in September.   Congratulations to the following students:  Katherine Akre, Dan Denby, Rachel Groters, Caroline Hays, and Corey Van Dyk.

Physics teacher and Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering coach Carlton Rink reports that the WYSE team placed third at the State competition last weekend.  Individual winners included:  Dan Denby (5th place in Chemistry), Megan Kazuba (3rd place in Physics), Katie McKay (4th place in English AND 5th place in Physics), Corey VanDyk (4th place in Math AND 5th place in Engineering Graphics), and Simon Wang (2nd place in Physics). According to Carlton, “This is the second best we have ever done (In 2005 we came in 2nd.)  This year’s team consisted of 1 Freshman, 6 Sophomores, 4 Juniors, and 2 Seniors so we should be solid next year as well.  Simon Wang earned a $1000 scholarship should he decide to attend the University of Illinois School of Engineering.”

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL IN REHEARSAL

There IS a balm in Gilead.  It takes the arrival of a young girl fresh out of prison to transform this tiny little town in the NORTHWOODS of Wisconsin.  Based on the motion picture of the same name, THE SPITFIRE GRILL, a musical, will be presented by the Timothy Christian High School Drama Club on the evenings of April 24, 25, and 26.  The story is told in song in a wonderful bluegrass style.  A message of grace, redemption and second chances shines through each note with the brilliant colors of paradise.  Come and join us for what promises to be a very moving experience for audience members. Performances will start at 7:30 PM in the Huizenga Auditorium.  Tickets will go on sale in the high school library/media center starting next Monday April 14.  Reserved seats will be available only through advanced ticket sales.  Tickets can be purchased during regular school hours in the library or they may be reserved by e-mailing Judd Rinsema at rinsemaj@timothychristian.com. This musical is recommended for ages 6th grade and up.

SOPHOMORE SUMMER READING BOOK

The summer reading book required for next year’s Sophomore class is the same book we used last year: “The Secret Family”.  Current sophomore students!  If you purchased the book “Secret Family” last year for your summer reading required book, you may resell them to current Freshmen. If you prefer, you can turn them in to the library with your name attached to the book.  The library will serve as a selling point for them.

Freshmen who will be sophomores next year may come to the library to purchase them, and we will get your money to you sellers.  We will sell them for $10.  This is the same price that we sold them for last year.  The book is not available from current book sellers, but is readily available from online used book sellers.  The library currently has 35 copies available for sale for $10.

SENIOR PORTRAIT NEWS FOR THE CLASS OF ‘09
During the month of APRIL any 2009 Senior can come to any Root Studio locations and be photographed with NO SITTING FEES!  During the month of MAY, the sitting fee is 1/2 Price. So please come in early and save!  Please check out their web site at rootstudios.com to find a location near you. Also, beginning with the class of 2009, our seniors will have the option to view their senior proofs online, instead of receiving paper proofs through the mail. Once online, seniors will have the ability to select their yearbook pose and place an order.   As security is always a top priority, a password is assigned to each student, allowing the family to decide who to grant access to (friends, relatives, etc.). HEADING FOR GRADUATION AT CALVIN COLLEGE THIS SPRING?

Pastor Tim Bowman from Grace Bible Church in Elmhurst sends this note to see if anyone can help: “When I was in seminary at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in the late 80's we developed a friendship with a family from Singapore and have kept in contact with them over the years. One of their daughters is graduating from Calvin on May 17 and her boyfriend, who attended Calvin a short while, is presently in China and is coming for her graduation. He bought a plane ticket from China to Chicago but the additional cost of a plane ticket to Grand Rapids was too much and apparently, from what she told me, the train schedule doesn't work well for him to get to Calvin in time for the graduation celebrations. He arrives in Chicago on May 15 at 4:45 p.m. and he is looking for a ride with someone who is going to Calvin that evening or the next morning.

This is just one way and would be very helpful to this young man. If anyone wants additional information or is willing to help they can contact me and I will put them in contact with this young man. –Tim Bowman, Pastor, Grace Bible Church, Elmhurst http://www.gracebiblechurchelmhurst.com/pastors.php?action=bowman

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

The Diamond

A businessman boarded a plane to find, sitting next to him, an elegant woman wearing the largest, most stunning diamond ring he had ever seen. He asked her about it.

"This is the Klopman diamond," she said. "It is beautiful, but there is a terrible curse that goes with it."

"What's the curse?" the man asked.

"Mr. Klopman."
