The week of April 28, 2008
A weekly email newsletter from Timothy Christian Schools to keep you informed, involved and invited.
Our Mission: “Serving God and His people, Timothy Christian Schools develops academically prepared Christian disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the world.”
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
“Idolatry is the practice of ascribing absolute value to things of relative worth. Under certain circumstances money, patriotism, sexual freedom, moral principles, family loyalty, physical health, social or intellectual preeminence, and so on are fine things to have around, but to make them the standard by which all other values are measured, to make them your masters, to look to them to justify your life and save your soul is sheerest folly.”-- Frederick Buechner in “Wishful Thinking”

YOUNG AUTHORS FESTIVAL NEWS
Thirty Timothy students will be attending the Young Authors Festival tomorrow, April 29. This annual event, sponsored by Trinity Christian College and attended by students from 15 Christian schools, is an opportunity to celebrate writing. Here at Timothy, every student in grades 2-6 wrote and published an original book. Then the stories were read by the 4th-8th grade classes, and two authors from each class were chosen to represent Timothy at the Festival. These students will hear author Kevin Luthardt speak about how he writes and illustrates his books. They will see some stories come alive through the improvisation of Trinity’s TrinProv group; they will also break out into small groups to talk about their own books.
Tonight, April 28, Trinity Christian College invites anyone in the community to come and get a taste of tomorrow’s Young Authors Festival. A reception will be held in the Grand Lobby of the Ozinga Chapel at 7:00 p.m. this evening for author Kevin Luthardt. He will speak about his books, and TrinProv will perform stories written by some of the children who will be at the Festival on Tuesday. The author’s books will be available for purchase and autographing. Families are invited to attend; all children will receive a small prize. Trinity Christian College is located at 6601 W. College Drive, Palos Heights, IL.
TRIATHLON STUDENTS PLACE WELL AGAIN
Congratulations to our grades 7 and 8 Math Triathlon Team (and coaches Tameling and Berens) who finished 2nd (in a field of 17) at the Trinity Christian College event. 7th grader Andrew Groenewold took 3rd overall in the individual competition.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL ONE OF THE BEST
There IS a balm in Gilead. It took the arrival of a young girl fresh out of prison to transform the tiny little town in the NORTHWOODS of Wisconsin. Based on the motion picture of the same name, THE SPITFIRE GRILL, a musical, was presented by the Timothy Christian High School Drama Club last weekend. The story was told in song in a wonderful bluegrass style. A message of grace, redemption and second chances came through each note with the brilliant colors of paradise. Thank you to the many who played a role in bring what was—according to many drama club veterans--one of the best drama productions in Timothy’s storied history. That’s saying something1
SOPHOMORE SUMMER READING BOOK
The summer reading book required for next year’s sophomore class is the same book we used last year: “The Secret Family”. Current sophomore students! If you purchased the book “Secret Family” last year for your summer reading required book, you may resell them to current Freshmen. If you prefer, you can turn them in to the library with your name attached to the book. The library will serve as a selling point for them.
Freshmen who will be sophomores next year may come to the library to purchase them, and we will get your money to you sellers. We will sell them for $10. This is the same price that we sold them for last year. The book is not available from current book sellers, but is readily available from online used book sellers. The library currently has 35 copies available for sale for $10.
SENIOR PORTRAIT NEWS FOR THE CLASS OF ‘09

So please come in early and save! Please check out their web site at rootstudios.com to find a location near you. Also, beginning with the class of 2009, our seniors will have the option to view their senior proofs online, instead of receiving paper proofs through the mail. Those who do not select this option will receive paper proofs as in years past.
IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELING AND REGISTRAR OFFICES
Summer drivers’ education information is now available in Timothy’s high school office for the following school districts: Morton District High School; Oak Park & River Forest High School; Leyden H.S. District Summer; Proviso West; and York High School.
HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY AUTHOR
High school chemistry teacher Steve Adamski had an article and photo published recently in the May-August Journal of the “Armored Fighting Vehicles Association.” As Steve puts it, “Although AFV News is a small and seemingly narrow focus journal, it has been in print for 43 years and it has “discovered “and helped launch the writing careers of several prolific World War II authors. I had originally only intended to let them publish the photo. I didn’t feel I was much of a writer. The publisher of the AFV News asked me to get more historical context to the photo so I did a bit of research. He liked my research skills enough that he asked me to write another article. My next article will be in the September issue and is about a defunct secret defense line in Bulgaria that was leftover from the Communist era which included 40 rare German Nazi tanks.”
STUDENT TRAVELS TO CUBA
Freshman Abby Canfield recently returned from a trip to Cuba with the youth choir of her church, Fourth Presbyterian in Chicago, which has traveled to Cuba to visit their sister church, First Presbyterian of Havana, for the last several years on religious and humanitarian missions. Abby and her mother Anne were interviewed in the local Pioneer Press newspaper in Western Springs.

BOARD MEMBER CAMPUS VISIT QUOTE
At the last meeting of the Timothy Board of Directors a Board member shared comments on a recent campus visit: “Driving back I thought much of our work as a Board member. Most is done in the workshop. Discussion, debate, dealing with the urgent, the necessary and mundane, sometime long hours, some levity and a little frustration. Going on the school visit is getting out of the workshop into the showroom and seeing some of the fruits of our collective labors. It may not be perfect but it’s a grand sight and an amazing work. To Him bee the glory for all he has done, for the vision of the founders and the continued work in which we are employed.”

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
A group of Americans were traveling by tour bus through Norway. As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat's milk was used. She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing.
"These" she explained "are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce." She then asked, "What do you do in America with your old goats?"
A spry old gentleman answered, "They send us on bus tours!"
