The week of November 12, 2007
A weekly email newsletter from Timothy Christian Schools to keep you informed, involved and invited.
Our Mission: “Serving God and His people, Timothy Christian Schools develops academically prepared Christian disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the world.”
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Nothing makes one so dizzy as human reasoning, which sees everything from an earthly point of view, and does not allow illumination from above. Earthly reasoning is covered with mud. Therefore, we have need of streams from above, so that, when the mud has fallen away, whatever part of the reason is pure may be carried on high and may be thoroughly imbued with the lessons taught there. This takes place when we manifest both a well-disposed soul and an upright life. - St. John Chrysostom Homily 24 (John 2:23-3:4), A.D. 390

“NOT FOR SALE CAMPAIGN” UPDATE
Approximately 100 people came yesterday afternoon to hear a challenging and provocative presentation by author and professor David Batstone on a Christian response to the issue of global human trafficking. The audience was a great mix of alumni, current students, parents, members of area churches, and Board members and staff. What’s next? Stay tuned for news on specific actions which resulted from yesterday’s presentation. And if you were here and want to be part of a task force to explore our options, drop an email to larsen@timothychristian.com.
This event was sponsored by Timothy and supported by Change Design Group, Darwill Press, Providence Bank, V3, and Bastian and Joan Knoppers.
OPEN HOUSE A GREAT SUCCESS
Yesterday’s Open House was another successful introduction to Timothy for 37 families, representing a potential 63 students. Historically, we’ve done pretty well with converting the November open house interest into Timothy students, so such a big turn-out could mean great things for enrollment. Once again, word-of-mouth promotion and testimony, our website, and the new digital sign combined to bring most of the visitors to campus.
SMARTBOARD MOMENTUM BUILDS: ADOPT A SMARTBOARD PROGRAM CONTINUES
Over the CEA convention break wiring preparations were made for the installation of an additional 20 SMARTBoards on campus, and installations are nearly completed, with this amazing technology spreading to grades 6-8 (11) and additional high school classrooms (9). The first round brought 12 SMARTBoards to grades 2-5 and 3 to the high school.
The very good news is that parents and alumni—impressed by what they see from teachers and hear from their students—are offering to “adopt” a SMARTBoard or two for the school. While the first round was financed by gifts from Partners in Education and private donations, we’re still looking for donors for the second round. If you’d like to help with this cause with gifts small or large, contact Dave Larsen at (630) 782-4072 for the details. Recently alumni reunion classes have joined the effort too. As of today, five of the twenty have been purchased.
Still wondering what SMARTBoards are all about? Check out this link from our website: http://www.timothychristian.com/smartboards.php
ANNUAL SPORTS PARENT MEETING
The annual high school Sports Parent Meeting for fall, winter and spring sport athletes will be held tonight, Monday, November 12, 2007 in the high school cafeteria at 6:00 pm. Included in the meeting will be a presentation by the Athletic Booster Club and an opportunity to sign up to work in the concessions stand for home basketball games. Parents of boys’ basketball team members are asked to meet with their coaches before the large group meeting at about 5:30 in the cafeteria. Parents of girls’ basketball team members will meet with their coaches immediately after the large group meeting. All parents of TCHS athletes are strongly encouraged to attend.
VOLLEYBALL HONORS
Congratulations to Kimmy Vos, Lindsay Vander Brug, and Anneke Stremler who received all-conference recognition in volleyball this year. Also, coach Melanie Lumkes was selected by her peers as the Private School League Coach of the Year! Congratulations to all for these significant honors.
“ANNIE” COMES TO TIMOTHY
The popular musical “Annie” comes to the Timothy stage this Thursday-Saturday November 15-17 for performances in the Huizenga Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Tickets are now on sale from the High School library for $6.00 adults and $5.00 for students/senior citizens.
MINI-BAZAAR AND PASTA DINNER BEFORE SEEING “ANNIE” ON FRIDAY THE 16TH
Partners In Education sponsors a Dinner-Theater Night on Friday the 16th. Before the evening’s production of “Annie,” come to a pasta dinner in the high school cafeteria ($5.00 per child/$8.00 per adult). A mini-bazaar will also be held from 5-8:00 p.m., also in the cafeteria. Questions? Call Melanie Hansberger at (630)589-4875.
JOIN THE “BENEFIT BAR” MOVEMENT

CALLING ALL TECHNOLOGISTS!
Timothy has begun developing a list of technology professionals who would occasionally lend their experience to the school. We are beginning to come across areas where we need someone to help troubleshoot an issue or just help out with a small project, and we need your help. If you have experience with Exchange, Web Application Development, ISA, IIS or other enterprise level networking products or would be willing to assist on small projects when necessary and would like to help, please send your name and your expertise to Sue Lubben at stlubben@comcast.net.

HIGH SCHOOL INCOMPLETE GRADES

“NEW TO YOU” RESALE STORE: DECK THE HALLS AND WALLS
All parents are invited to a special evening to decorate the store for Christmas. On Tuesday, November 13 from about 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., you are invited to help us put out the boxes and boxes of Christmas merchandise that have been donated. The store will only be open for volunteers. Meet other parents, have some hot cider, and help out at Timothy's upscale resale store. The Christmas sales bring in extra money for Timothy and the three other Christian schools it supports. New to You is located at 1700 W. Roosevelt Road in Broadview. It is about twelve minutes east of Timothy on Roosevelt Road. For more information, please call Shari Buma (630) 527-6738.
CARE FOR GOD’S CREATION AND HIS PEOPLE: NEW TO YOU AND 8TH GRADERS
In the elementary/middle school this year each grade level selects activities based on Psalm 8 around the Worship theme this year: “This is my Father’s World.” Some Timothy eighth grade students are heading to New to You on Wednesday for a service project related to their choice. In addition, eighth grade students will collect and deliver any costume jewelry or housewares donated by the rest of the elementary and middle school by Wednesday.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
Taking his seat in his chambers, the judge faced the opposing lawyers.
"So," he said, "I have been presented, by both of you, with a bribe."
Both lawyers squirmed uncomfortably. "You, attorney Leon, gave me $15,000. And you, attorney Campos, gave me $10,000."
The judge reached into his pocket and pulled out a check. He handed it to Leon. "Now then, I'm returning $5,000, and we're going to decide this case solely on its merits!"
