The week of November 19, 2007

A weekly email newsletter from Timothy Christian Schools to keep you informed, involved and invited.

Our Mission: “Serving God and His people, Timothy Christian Schools develops academically prepared Christian disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the world.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Classical education has always encouraged students to acquire more than knowledge and skills; it has also encouraged them to develop the virtues that will incline them to use these things for the benefit of others.  Christians believe that such virtues derive from the Holy Spirit and that this is so no matter who has them.  But . . . Christians have special reason for cultivating honesty, compassion, and other good traits.  These virtues suit Christians.  They’re part of dying and rising with Christ and therefore part of the family uniform for the people of God.”  --Neal Plantinga in “Engaging God’s World”

GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL UPDATE

The Varsity Girls finished the IMSA/ACS Hoops Happenings tournament in good form.  After struggling in our opening night game, the girls responded well the next two nights.  On Friday night we beat Reed Custer 40-39 with good play coming from Lindsay VanderBrug (11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) and Kelly Buma with 9 points and 6 rebounds.  On Saturday afternoon we played Immaculate Conception for the Consolation Championship which we won 41-37.  Once again good play from Kelly Buma (8 points 4 rebounds), and Katie Dirkse contributed 8 points.  Good team play throughout!

TIMOTHY REIGNS AS MATH TRIATHLON CHAMP

Led by teachers Marge Bogdalek, Ann Bakker and Jane Duiven our Elementary School Math Team once again took 1st place at the Math Triathalon this past Friday, held at Trinity Christian College.  This annual event has the students participating in both individual and relay “math” events, in which they can showcase their Math skills. They brought back a beautiful trophy for their efforts. Congratulations to all!

ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL THEME EXAMPLES

The theme “This is My Father’s World” is being implemented at every grade level in creative ways. Here are some examples:

  • 1st grade has already donated over 60 shoeboxes filled with gifts to Samaritans Purse and their Operation Christmas Child project.
  • 2nd grade has launched their recycling program and other plans are in place to participate with Pennies for Penicillin (Philippines) and Compassion Child.
  • 3rd grade has introduced students to the Hogar de Niños Nazareth Orphanage in Honduras and presented them with multiple service opportunities.  Next Monday, they will be hosting some of the orphans in their morning classes.
  • 7th grade has established a relationship with the students at Elim Christian School, and they hope to deepen that relationship over the course of the year.
  • 8th grade had a great time on Wednesday, dividing the class into four groups and spending the morning working at New to You, Westside Christian School, the Illinois Food Depository, and with local recycling efforts in our immediate community.

THIRD GRADE STUDENTS MEET HONDURAN STUDENTS

This year, to integrate the theme “This is my Father’s World,” each grade level was asked to come up with a project to help the students understand ways to preserve and protect our Father’s World.   The third grade chose to support Hogar de Niños Nazareth Orphanage in Honduras.  The students were thrilled to learn that some of the students from the orphanage would be here in the States this week!  The orphanage began quite a few years ago when an 18-year old girl by the name of Carmen took on several young children.  “Mama” Carmen is now in charge of over 200 children.  We were blessed to have seven of the students visit with our school today, as well as Mama Carmen.  The entire 3rd grade gathered together with the students for a time of singing and questions and answers, translated by our very own Spanish teacher Mrs. Maria Brasser.  They learned a lot and definitely enjoyed the time together with their new friends!

MUSIC FESTIVAL COMING TO TIMOTHY

Timothy will host a music festival featuring adjudicators from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music on January 26th, 2008?  The event is for students in grades 7-12 in the categories of voice, strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion.  Sign-up forms are available with all 7-12 music teachers.

TIMOTHY WELCOMES CONGRESSMAN PETER ROSKAM

Next Monday we are honored to welcome Congressman Peter Roskam to Timothy.  Mr. Roskam will be speaking to our 8th grade students in the morning about how a bill becomes a law, as well as being a Christian in politics.  This ties in nicely with the 8th grade study of U.S. History and the Constitution.

CALLING ALL TECHNOLOGISTS!

Timothy has begun developing a list of technology professionals who would occasionally lend their experience to the school.  We are beginning to come across areas where we need someone to help troubleshoot an issue or just help out with a small project, and we need your help. If you have experience with Exchange, Web Application Development, ISA, IIS or other enterprise level networking products or would be willing to assist on small projects when necessary and would like to help, please send your name and your expertise to Sue Lubben at stlubben@comcast.net

HIGH SCHOOL INCOMPLETE GRADES

All high school incomplete grades from 1st quarter must be finalized with the teacher by 3 PM on Nov. 20.  It is the responsibility of the student, not the teacher, to talk with his/her teacher about what must yet be turned in or completed by that time.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

A man lay sprawled across three entire seats in the posh theater. When the usher came by and noticed this, he whispered to the man, "Sorry, sir, but you're only allowed one seat."

The man groaned but didn't budge. The usher became impatient.

"Sir, if you don't get up from there I'm going to have to call the manager."

Again, the man just groaned, which infuriated the usher who turned and marched briskly back up the aisle in search of his manager. In a few moments, both the usher and the manager returned and stood over the man.

Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move him, but with no success. Finally, they summoned the police.

The cop surveyed the situation briefly then asked, "All right buddy, what's your name?"

"Sam," the man moaned.

"Where ya from, Sam?"

With pain in his voice, Sam replied, "The balcony."
