The week of December 3, 2007
A weekly email newsletter from Timothy Christian Schools to keep you informed, involved and invited.
Our Mission: “Serving God and His people, Timothy Christian Schools develops academically prepared Christian disciples who embrace Christ’s call to transform the world.”
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Living as we do in a world that suffers so much, two opposing possibilities can easily tempt us: either to turn our backs and live oblivious to the pain or to allow the pain to overwhelm us and despair to take up residence in our hearts. The truly faithful option is to face the pain and live joyfully in the midst of it. Those who suffer most remind us of how tragic and arrogant it would be for us to lose hope on behalf of people who have not lost theirs. They are teachers of joy. - Joyce Hollyday in “Then Your Light Shall Rise”

THINKING ABOUT “THE GOLDEN COMPASS”
This Friday the movie “The Golden Compass” will be released, and has already created quite a bit of controversy. If you’ve not heard about the controversy or been a part of it, you soon will be. We’ve found a balanced and thoughtful discussion about the movie by Christian professor and film critic Jeffrey Overstreet that may help you find your way through all the hype. Overstreet teaches at Seattle Pacific University (a Free Methodist Christian University) and reviews films for “Christianity Today.” Overstreet’s views approximate Timothy’s in terms of how Christians are to relate to culture, and how this film creates both opportunities and challenges. Overstreet’s suggestions create an opportunity for good discussion in your family. Check out his analysis by clicking on this link:
SAVE THE DATE FOR THE TIMOTHY AUCTION; COME TO THE MEETING TO VOLUNTEER
Please reserve Saturday, April 19 for the Timothy Auction “This Is My Father’s World.” The exact time and location will be announced later. An auction committee meeting is taking place in the high school conference room this Wednesday at 6:30 PM and we would love to see new faces. The Auction is a production of Partners in Education.
THE LEGACY FUND OF THE TIMOTHY FOUNDATION GROWS THROUGH CHALLENGE MATCH
Following the fall meeting of the Timothy Foundation Mr. and Mrs. Peter Huizenga presented a $50,000 Challenge Match to grow the Legacy Fund of the Foundation, which strengthens the ability of the Foundation to offer tuition assistance to Timothy families. We are happy to report that members of the Timothy Foundation have matched this gift and $100,000 will be added to the Foundation’s assets, now totaling over $5 million.
MUSIC FESTIVAL COMING TO TIMOTHY
Timothy will host a music festival featuring adjudicators from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music on January 26th, 2008? The event is for students in grades 7-12 in the categories of voice, strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion. Sign-up forms are available with all 7-12 music teachers.
DIRECTOR OF APOLLO CHORUS TO VISIT TIMOTHY
For many years, the 6th grade class has studied Handel's Messiah during advent. The students discuss it, listen to it and memorize certain pieces. This Thursday, we are honored to have Dr. Alltop, Director of the Apollo Chorus, and a guest soloist, join us at Timothy to talk with our 6th graders. Then on Saturday, our 6th graders, along with their parents, will be heading downtown to the Symphony Center to hear the Apollo Chorus perform "The Messiah." What a great way to kick off the advent season!
THE “BEE’S” ARE COMING!
No, not the Killer Bees . . . it's the Geography Bees! Students qualify for this yearly competition by taking a written test. The top students then compete before the school in this academic quiz that tests their geography knowledge. You are welcome to join us for one or both of these competitions in the Huizenga Auditorium.
The dates for this year's Geo Bee's are:
Elementary School - Tuesday, December 11 at 12:50 p.m.
Middle School - Thursday, December 13 at 1:30 p.m.

CHRISTMAS CD BY TIMOTHY’S OWN GAIL SALVATORI
Four years ago Timothy’s orchestra director Gail Salvatori had four private viola students who wanted to learn some Christmas carols at the Christmas season. Much to her surprise, there weren’t any arrangements to be found! Frustrated, she resolved to write her own arrangements for her students and out of that work came a finished product of Christmas meditations for viola, or cello, and piano or harp. These nine copyrighted arrangements are now in print and have been for sale for a month. Ms. Salvatori has now recorded this set of arrangements for the advent season, playing both the viola and piano parts. The CD’s are available to purchase for $10. They are accompanied by calming Scripture meditations for this busy time of year. Contact Gail at (630) 653-5538.
ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS ARE IN!
We have the Chicago West/Central, Chicago North/Northwest and the Chicago South/Southwest editions of the popular Entertainment books for sale in the elementary/middle school office for $20.00. Checks need to be written to Timothy Christian P.I.E. This is another fundraising and service project sponsored by Partners in Education.

Questions or Comments, call Flory Hoving. (1040 S. Prospect Ave., Elmhurst, IL 60126. 630/279-5294). So far 38 receipts have been turned in, which amounts to $93.45 for Timothy.
Also, the Box Tops program produced over $900.00 through what was turned in for first half of year.
The Dominick's Fresh Value Card program has 92 people signed up. The proceeds for Timothy were $72.52 (June), $66.69 (July), $58.78 (August), and 111.73 (September).
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
WORST ANALOGIES...EVER (and they don’t come from Timothy students)
~ The brick wall was the color of a brick-red Crayola crayon.
~ I felt a nameless dread. Well, there probably is a long German name for it, like Geschpooklichkeit or something, but I don't speak German. Anyway, it's a dread that nobody knows the name for, like those little square plastic gizmos that close your bread bags. I don't know the name for those either.
~ He was as tall as a six-foot-three-inch tree.
~ The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.
~ The politician was gone but unnoticed, like the period after the Dr. on a Dr Pepper can.
~ He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
~ The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.
~ From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and "Jeopardy" comes on at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30.
~ Her eyes were like two brown circles with big black dots in the center.
~ Her date was pleasant enough, but she knew that if her life was a movie this guy would be buried in the credits as something like "Second Tall Man."
~ Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.
~ John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.
