The start of the boys basketball season had the varsity and sophomore teams scheduled at the Lisle Thanksgiving tournament and the freshman team playing at Maine East.

The varsity team had a strong start to the season, finishing 3-1 and second place against very good competition at Lisle HS. The Trojans began the season with a 3 point loss to eventual tournament champions Westmont High School despite a huge scoring night of 27 points by Brandon Orange. The Trojans couldn’t convert late on a pair of free throws and had an opportunity to take the lead in the final possessions but their shot came up just short. This was a great learning experience for a the team early in the season.

The Trojans responded well and learned their lessons quickly and jumped out to a 50-14 halftime led on Yorkville Christian in their next competition. Despite a good 3rd quarter by Yorkville the Trojans held on to a 74-35 victory.  The Trojans were led in scoring by Chris Brooks, Matt Owens and Justin Baez with 11 points respectively.

In the third game of the tournament the Trojan faced up against a very feisty Evergreen Park team.  The Trojans did a good job breaking the trapping defense that Evergreen Park likes to play and again played a quality 1st half to secure a 53-38 victory.  Timothy was led in scoring by Brandon Orange with 21.  Ty Merrick played an excellent floor game in breaking the Evergreen Park press and assisted on several Trojan baskets, while chipping in 8 points.

In the final game of the tournament Timothy played tournament host Lisle.  Lisle brought an excited crowd to gym and provide a really fun basketball environment.  Despite being down 3 at halftime and Brandon Orange hampered by foul trouble the Trojans found ways to make plays to secure a 3 point victory and finish 3-1 in the tournament.  Timothy was led in scoring by sophomore Matt Owens with 13, Michael Thomas with 10 and Ty Merrick 9.  Nick Huisman played outstanding minutes for the Trojans dominating the defensive glass and anchoring the base of the defense to allow the Trojans to take the lead in the 3rd quarter, make some plays down the stretch and hold on for the victory.

Overall, it was great start to the season.  The varsity continues its competitions on Friday night, December 1 versus Chicago Christian.  This will be the first home game of the season and the first home game in the new facility.

The sophomore team had a strong showing with a 3-0 start and first place finish. The freshman team also had a strong showing going 2-1 and finishing second place at Maine East.
