Second Grade Team

Life in 2nd Grade

Second grade is the final year in the Early Childhood experience. It is a building year – building on many of the foundations that were laid in the previous years for learning to read.

During second grade, we transition from learning to read to reading to learn. We express ourselves through writing and learn how capital letters, punctuation, correct spelling and even neatness help us to better communicate.

We also build on math concepts by learning to add and subtract two digit / three digit numbers, making change with money, telling time to five minute intervals and beginning multiplication and division.

We learn about God’s world through Science and Social Studies units on matter, weather, magnets, rocks, communities, the United States, different countries and Native Americans.

In Bible we learn about the story of God’s people, beginning with the kings of Israel and continuing through the early church. One of our memory verses is Micah 6:8, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Through Independent Study we begin to discover the individual gifts and interests that God has blessed us with as we research careers of our choice. As the second grade year progresses we develop a new level of independence and begin to take responsibility for our own learning. It is an exciting year of growth for all!
