TC began the tournament on Wednesday, December 27th against Addison Trail. The girls knew to expect a fast paced game with some quick guards. We had a good game plan to slow them down and be prepared for a tough 1-2-2 half court trap. TC came to play. It was tight first half with a lot of back and forth scoring. Good patience and some hot shooting in the 2nd period helped TC go into the locker room with a 30-23 lead. Jordyn Strube scored 11 of her game high 23 points in the second quarter, she also had 4 rebounds and 5 steals. Emily DeBoer was tough inside and added 9 points, and 8 rebounds. Heidi Westra had a great defensive game and also added 6 points, 4 assists and a game high 9 rebounds. TC won the opening game 51-35.
Thursday we came back to face the eventual Tournament Champion, Harvest Christian. What a game and some incredible learning opportunities to improve our game. A great start and knowing they had great guards who could shoot and drive, we slowed them down. TC had the lead 11-8 after the first quarter. A tougher second quarter showed us down only 3 at the half. As discussed at half time, a team like Harvest and the experienced players they have, we knew they would come at us, and at us they did. Many 3rd quarter turnovers saw us struggling to get the ball past half court. Lack of scoring in the 3rd hurt us and there senior leader took over. TC lost 60-38. As I look back now and got to see them play more, this was an incredible team and the girls will get better form this opportunity. Our freshmen Hannah Schuringa had a strong game and lead the team with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Jordyn Strube added 9 points, and Heidi Westra added 2 points, but leading the team with 8 rebounds and 3 assist.
Friday we were matched against our top Conference rival, St Eds. Playing a team 3 times in less than a month is not easy and the girls were excited to get the chance to play them again. Sadly we were not prepared for the match up and and we saw ourselves right from the start down by 9. Hot shooting by St Ed’s does not make it easy but the girls battled back the entire time and even got down to within 6 points, but we could never take a lead or stop their tough shooting guards, we loss the contest 61-42. Hannah Schuringa once again lead the team with 14 points and12 rebounds. Olivia Schuringa added 10 points and 9 rebounds. Lauren Gehrke had some good buckets down the stretch to add 8 points.
Our final day of the tournament had us facing another tough scrappy guard strong team from Antioch. A very slow start for our Trojans had us down quickly in the begging and saw us fighting our way back the entire time. Down 10 at half time we changed our game plan and came out looking to break their tough half court press and take it to them inside. A very good 3rd quarter had us outscoring Antioch 19-9 and tying the game at 35. An exciting and back forth fourth quarter had us once again tied and into OT we go. Fantastic free throw shooting kept us in the game but sadly we could not pull out the win and we suffered a 1 point loss in Overtime, 59-58. A tough finish to an already tough tournament, but signs of good things and the challenge to get better from mistakes will take the girls into a strong second half of their season. Jordyn Strube lead the scoring with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Heidi Westra was tough with 12 points going 5-5 from the floor, grabbing 6 rebounds and handing out 4 assists. Emily DeBoer was a huge presence inside for us scoring 12 points, including 6-6 from the free throw line and grabbing 8 rebounds.
A big thank you to everyone from family, to faculty, to friends coming out to support the girls, it means a lot. We look forward go a great second half of our season after we get back from an amazing trip to the Dominican Republic during our Renew break.
Congratulations to Jordyn Strube for being selected to the All Tournament Team.
