This past week, qualifying students took part in the first step of the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Our grade school and middle school students took a test and the students who received the highest scores participated in the competition before an audience of parents and peers.
The Elementary Spelling Bee, held on Tuesday, January 18, went 11 rounds. The participants included: Kayla Bishop, Carly Brush, Clarissa Chen, Claudia Clark, Joanna Clohessy, Natalia Dzuria, Natalia Fierz, Caleb Hoekstra, Aiden Hoogstra, Jenny Lumkes, Elliot Mathew, Mukisa Randall, Ashley Rakers, Sejal Sachs, Lily Stanek and Theo Veldman.
The first six rounds the students held quite steady with very few eliminations. Slowly students filtered out until three were left…Claudia Clark, Aiden Hoogstra and Jenny Lumkes. In the end, Aiden was declared the champion with Jenny as runner-up. This earned them a spot in the middle school bee which was held on Thursday, January 18.
Middle school participants were: Winston Chen, James Clohessy, Melania Fierz, Rohan Jain, Kailey Jirsa, Joey LaBarbera, Alex Martens, Emily Mathew, Brian Ochonicky, David Sianghio, Andrea Torres and Matthew Torres.
It was another fiercely competitive Bee although the participants did not crack under the pressure. Last year’s Bee winner, Matthew Torres, spelled a word correctly in one of the final rounds when the final three missed their word. After spelling one more word correctly, he was crowned champion. It was then “game on” as Melania, Winston and Rohan battled it out for the runner-up spot. They went numerous rounds spelling words that weren’t on the list and included many words adults in the audience didn’t even know! In the end, Winston pulled ahead and earned the runner-up spot. Winston and Matthew will now go on to represent Timothy Christian Schools in the DuPage Private School Bee held on Thursday, February 8.
Congratulations to Aiden, Jenny, Winston, Matthew and all our participants!
