Timothy Sports Spotlight - 2011-2012
Lady Trojans Defeat Glenbard South
1.31.12
Last night's game at Glenbard South was a fun one. With both teams coming into the game with only one loss in the conference, the importance of a victory for either team was crucial. Knowing that going into the game, the Lady Trojans were excited and eager to get the game going. The coach on the other hand had plenty of nervous excitement and so many thoughts flooded his mind. Needless to say, all of those things go away once the game starts.
Timothy came out with a great start with posting a lead of 12-4 at one point in the first quarter. Glenbard South finished up the quarter by scoring the last four points to make it 12-8 after one.
Both teams found some offensive flow in the second quarter with Timothy scoring 17 points and Glenbard scoring 15. That allowed TC to take a 29-23 lead into the half. The second quarter saw some timely three's from Kelli LeGrand and Jessica Dirkse.
The third quarter did not resemble the second quarter in that each team struggled to score at times. Thankfully Timothy was able to win the quarter 9-8 and take a 38-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
Free throws were the name of the game in the fourth. The Lady Trojans scored 10 points alone on free throws while only making two baskets. Overall, Timothy shot 22-28 from the line, which proved to be a valuable asset tonight. The final score ended up being 52-37.
As was the case again last night, Cassidy Block continues her torrid pace of scoring by dropping 27 in the game. She also had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks. Kelli LeGrand had 9 points, 2 rebounds, Jessica Dirkse had 6 points while Tessa Bosman had 4 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals. Shelly Ditchfield, Jasmine Stein and Stephanie Kuiper had 2 points apiece.
Next up for the Lady Trojans is Riverside-Brookfield on Thursday night. It is also Senior Night, so make plans to come out and support the Lady Trojans on this special evening.

On Tuesday night, the Trojans started the second half of the conference season. They had lost to the Raiders earlier in the season by 17 pts. Tuesday night was a battle that went down to the wire. In the end however the Trojans found themselves on the losing end 61-59. Danny Leach was the leading scorer on the night with 21 pts (1 reb, 1 stl). Chris Ridolphi chipped in with 15 pts (6 rebs, 4 stls, 5 assists). Matt Morrison had a solid game with 10 pts (4 rebs, 2 blocks, 1 stl, 1 assist). The entire team brought a strong positive energy and made a strong push to try to pull out the win but the Trojans came up a little short.
The Trojans will next play on Friday night at Illiana Christian. Please come out and support the Trojans. It is Illiana's homecoming so the place should be packed. We would love to see a great turnout from the Trojan faithful. We really appreciate the support.

Buzzer Beater Shot Earns Victory for Men's Varsity Against Holland Christian
1.21.12
Click on picture to see the buzzer winning shot!
For the past 3 years every time the Trojans have been scheduled to play the Holland Christian Maroons from Michigan there has been a snow storm. The snow came down hard on Friday to cancel Friday night's game with Fenton but the roads were clear for Holland to travel for Saturday night's contest at Timothy Christian.
The gymnasium was packed and the electric atmosphere helped the Trojans get off to a very strong start jumping out to a 12-0 lead. The Trojans were able to control the first quarter and at the end of the 1st quarter led 16-3. The 2nd quarter saw Holland Christian settle down and take control and outscore the Trojans 17-5. Timothy held a slight one point lead at halftime 21-20. The 3rd quarter was played evenly with each team scoring and defending to knot the score 31-31 going into the 4th quarter. Holland Christian was able to take and increase their lead to 9. They held a 7 point lead with 2 minutes left in the game. The Trojans were able to keep fighting defensively and with some missed free throws from Holland and some key baskets by the Trojans, the Trojans were able to close the gap. After a missed Holland Christian free throw, the Trojans had possession of the ball with 10 seconds to go down 40-42. The Trojans ran a set play and after Holland defended the initial option, Danny Leach was able to find Tyler VanderBrug who eyed up and shot a 3 pt shot which hit the rim and bounced in at the buzzer for a 43-42 victory. This sent the RED ZONE crowd into a frenzy!
The Trojans were led on this night by Connor VanderBrug with a career high in points with 17 to go along with 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 stl and 1 block, Danny Leach (13 pts, 7 rebs, 5 assists,1 stl), and Tyler VanderBrug (7 pts, 6 rebs, 5 stls, 2 assists). Matt Morrison (2 pts, 2 rebs, 1 stl), Chris Ridolphi (2 pts, 5 rebs, 1 assist), Aaron Snoeyink (1 reb, 1 stl, 1 assist),Luke Davidson (2 pts, 1 reb), Drew Miller (1 assist), Matt Robinson (2 rebs, 1 assist), Brennen Lindsey (2 rebs) all dented the stat sheet.
The Trojans would like to say THANK YOU to all the fans and the entire RED ZONE as the atmosphere in the gym was incredible. The Trojans move to 10-8 on the season. This week will see the Trojans play 3 road games. Tuesday night at Aurora Christian at 7:30 pm, Thursday at Fenton with game time at 7:00 pm, and Saturday night at Walther Lutheran with game time at 7:30 pm. Lady Trojans "Think "Pink"
1/17/12
On Tuesday, January 17, the Lady Trojans hosted Chicago Christian for "Think Pink Night”. It was a special evening with the theme focused on Breast Cancer Awareness as well as cancer research. The color pink was everywhere, including the Lady Trojans jerseys and it was evident that the support for this worthy cause has touched many people.
The team was honored to have TC parent Mrs. Tracy Leach give her testimony of her personal fight against Breast Cancer before the game. It was very moving and inspirational. The game was a real nail-biter as both teams played well and fought for the victory. In the end, Timothy defeated Chicago Christian 44-41. However, the night really belonged to the fight against cancer.
We are grateful for all the helping hands, donors, parents and TC community for making a night to remember!! We were able to raise over $1300 which will be donated to the Kay Yow Foundation. Click here to view more photos from this event.
Lisle Defeat the Lady Trojans
1/4/12
Lisle High School defeated Timothy this evening by a score of 37-25. It was not a good game offensively for the Lady Trojans as there were too many turnovers and open shots not falling. Lisle did a good job down the stretch with making some timely baskets to increase their lead.
Timothy looks to bounce back as they play back to back conference games on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is away, while Saturday's game is home vs Illiana.
Thanks for the fan support tonight and we hope to see you again on Saturday.
JV Girls vs. Lisle
1/4/12
The JV Girls struggled in the first half and were down 6-3 after two quarters. They came out and outscored Lisle 10-2 in the 3rd quarter on their way to an 8 point victory. Mackenzie Bone led the Trojans with 3 steals and 7 points, including converting 5 of 6 free throws in the 4th quarter. Kaitlyn Gehrke chipped in with 6 points, and Alexis Hoogendoorn and Lauren Estelle had 4 points each for the Trojans. Final score was 23-15 in the Trojan's favor.
Cheerleaders Take 1st Place at Invite
12/17/11
The Varsity Cheerleaders (pictured above) competed at the Pontiac High School Invitational on Dec. 17, 2011. There were 13 Small Varsity teams competing (several of them State finalists last year) and Timothy Christian placed FIRST!
The team will compete again this weekend at the Belvidere High School Invitational on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 1 pm. Nine of the Small Varsity teams we will be competing against are also in our sectional assignment, so we are looking forward to this Sectionals "dress rehearsal"! GO, TC!
Lady Trojans Lose a Tough One in Championship Game
The Webster's dictionary defines agony as an intense pain of the mind or body. Well, it may not have been intense, but it was painful as the Lady Trojans came up just short 43-42 in it's loss to St. Edward in the Championship game. If you were there to watch the game, you understand why it was so painful. TC had a 10 point lead in the second half and roughly an 8 point lead with 3:00 minutes to go. What transpired from there was tough to swallow. St. Ed's picked up their intensity and were able to force several turnovers which translated into points for them. Even as the time wound down, TC still had a two point lead with 1:05 left. Unable to convert some timely free throws, St. Ed's hit a huge three to go up by one. The last minute saw a few free throw made by St. Ed's and a couple of missed opportunities for the Lady Trojans. Jessica Dirkse hit a three at the buzzer, but with a four point deficit, it was kind of anti-climatic.
Timothy was led in scoring by All-Tournament selection, Cassidy Block. She poured in 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Tessa Bosman had another double double on the night with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Dirkse knocked down three threes, to finish with 9 points and Stephanie Kuiper had 5 points while Shelly Ditchfield contributed 3 points.
The tournament saw a lot of good things for the Lady Trojans even with a stinging defeat in the finals. The overall good team play was encouraging to see and the ability to raise their level of play is something to build on going forward.
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the Lady Trojans over the Holiday Break. Your support was greatly appreciated.
Varsity Boys Take 4th at Glenbard West Tourney
The Trojans played very competitive games this Christmas Break at Glenbard West. The first night saw the Trojans lose to Wheaton Academy 58-46. The second game in pool play found the Trojans behind the entire game to finally take the lead with 40 seconds to go and get a victory over Addison Trail 53-52. The 3rd game was against St. Charles East who were led by heralded player Kendall Stephens. It was a tight game the entire way with the Trojans trying to get the final shot. Tyler VanderBrug got an offensive rebound and moved the ball to Matt Morrison who passed to an open Danny Leach in the corner to hit the 3 to preserve the victory 53-50.
The Trojans finished the pool play tied with St. Charles East and Wheaton Academy with a 2-1 record. Because of defensive points allowed, the Trojans played Leyden High School for overall 3rd place. The Trojans came out sluggish and were losing 9-0 early. They were able to claw their way back to take a lead in the 4th quarter. They were able to hold on to a slim lead late but Leyden came back to tie and force overtime. In the overtime, Leyden made their free throws to get the victory 51-43.
Many of the games this tournament were on www.ihigh.com with announcers. It is pretty interesting to listen to especially the call of the winning shot vs. St. Charles East. The link to the game is here if you want to listen to the call. You can fast forward to the end of the game. All stats can be found at www.maxpreps.com.
Congratulations to the Trojans. Also, congratulations to Danny Leach for being selected to the All-Tournament team. Thank you to all the fans for coming out and supporting the Trojans this Christmas. Our next game is a tough conference game at home this Friday vs. Ridgewood. Game time is 7:30 pm.
IC Outplays the Lady Trojans
12/13/11
Immaculate Conception was the victor last night. IC played a good game and Timothy was unable to get anything going offensively. The Lady Trojans will look to learn from last night's game as they prepare for the Bulldogs of Riverside-Brookfield.
Jessica Dirkse found her shooting stroke as she poured in 11 points on the evening. Cassidy Block had 6 points, 8 rebounds and Shelly Ditchfield, Stephanie Kuiper and Tessa Bosman each contributed 2 points.
Next game is at Riverside-Brookfield on Thursday at 7:00pm.
Lady Trojans Overtake Fenton
11/29/11
After a long layoff in which the Lady Trojans had not played game since November 19, Timothy took to the road this evening and battled Fenton in the opening of conference play. The long layoff did not hurt the team, as they jumped out to an 11-3 lead after one quarter of play. The second quarter saw Fenton climb their way back into the game and cut the lead to 20-17 at the half.
Timothy was able to regroup at the half and came out to prove they could play better. The third quarter was back in forth with Timothy eventually taking a 31-24 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was all Timothy! The Lady Trojans did a great job of moving the ball and converting easy baskets to put the game away. The final ended up being 44-29 in favor of the Lady Trojans.
Tessa Bosman led the way tonight with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Cassidy Block chipped in 9 points and 4 rebounds while Stephanie Kuiper continued her strong start to the season with 6 points, 2 rebounds and a huge block. Jessica Dirkse added 5 points to help round out the scoring. Kaylie Pries, Shelly Ditchfield and many others contributed some great defense tonight.
Timothy is off until Friday night, in which they host Glenbard South at 7:00pm. Make plans to come out and support the Lady Trojans in their home opener!
Varsity Boys Fall to IC at First Home Game
11/29/11
Tuesday night was the first home game for the Trojans. Things got off to a good start with the Trojans jumping out to a 10-6 lead. After that it was all IC as they rattled off a 14-0 run for a 20-10 lead at the end of the first period. From then on, the Trojans tried to play catch up and the closest they could get was within 4 pts near the end of the 3rd quarter. Although the Trojans kept battling and hung around, the Knights from IC were too much for the Trojans on this night as their defense held the Trojans to a cold shooting night of 29% from the field. The Trojans were led by Tyler VanderBrug with a career high of 23 pts, 4 rebs, 3 assists 2 blks, and 1 steal.
Thank you to the fans for coming out on this night. The next game is on Friday night as the Trojans open up their conference schedule at Glenbard South at 7:00 pm.

Friday, November 25
The Trojans lost a hard fought contest to Providence St. Mel on Friday night 57-51. The game was a battle from the beginning until the end as the Knights from Providence St. Mel and the Trojans from Timothy Christian laid it all on the court Friday night in Lisle at the Thanksgiving tournament. Both teams entered the game with 3-0 records and were trying to secure that 4th victory to have a chance to clinch the Thanksgiving championship on Saturday night.
The first half was a hard fought contest with St. Mel grabbing control midway through the 2nd quarter. The Trojans fought back to make a small run to close the gap to 28-22 at the half. The 3rd quarter was similar to the 2nd as the Knights opened up a lead and the Trojans again whittled down at the quarter to bring the score to 38-32. A fourth quarter saw a furious rally from the Trojans. Danny Leach made 4 3 pters in the quarter including a 4 pt play but at the end the Trojans came up on the short end of a 57-51 score.

Girls Varsity Wins the Consolation Championship
11/19/11
Timothy wrapped up tournament play by defeating Wheaton St. Francis this afternoon. Both teams were stuck in a classic dog fight with neither team leading by more than 4 points. The back and forth struggle was marred by plenty of fouls by each team. The teams combined to shoot 57 free throws! That's a lot of Free Throws. Unfortunately for the Lady Trojans, we did not make many of those attempts. But, thanks to some timely baskets and a few made free throws, Timothy pulled out the win 52-50. In winning the game, Timothy took home the Consolation Championship trophy...photos to come hopefully:-)
The Lady Trojans were led by two players with monster games. First off, Tessa Bosman dropped in 16 points and grabbed an astounding amount of rebounds....17 to be exact. Not to be outdone, Cassidy Block also dropped in 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. With the two double double efforts leading the way, Stephanie Kuiper contributed 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, Jessica Dirkse with 5 points, Kelli LeGrand 2 points, 3 assists and Kaylie Pries with 3 points.
Timothy is off for awhile, with their next game not until Nov. 29 vs. Fenton. The Timothy Christian Girls Basketball Program says thanks to all who came this afternoon and we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Lady Trojans bounce back
11/18/11
After suffering a season opening loss, the Lady Trojans were eager to get back on the court and show some improvement. They did not disappoint this evening as they rolled to a comfortable win over Indian Creek. After opening the 1st quarter with a blistering score of 17-2, Timothy never let Indian Creek back into the game. Timothy had a very balanced attack on the night, with several girls chipping in points to post the 51-13 win.
The Lady Trojans were led on the night by Cassidy Block. Cassidy posted her first ever triple double on the evening. She had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals. With Cassidy setting the pace, Stephanie Kuiper dropped in 9 points, 2 rebounds, Tessa Bosman with 7 points, 4 rebounds, block and Kelli LeGrand also chipped in 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Varsity Girls B-Ball Drops Season Opener
11/15/11
The Lady Trojans saw their first game action this evening as they traveled to Illinois Math and Science Academy to play in the Hoop Happenings Tournament. Timothy squared off against the Lady Foxes from Yorkville. With it being the first game, sloppy stole the show for most of the evening. Timothy was never really able to establish a rhythm in the game, due to the unfortunate nature of too many turnovers.
Timothy tried to battle through uneven play, but Yorkville capitalized a little too much on the sloppy play. Give credit to the Lady Foxes as they played aggressive and pressured the Lady Trojans all night. The final was 40-23. Timothy was led in scoring by Tessa Bosman with 6 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals. Jessica Dirkse chipped in 5 points, 2 rebounds and Cassidy Block had 3 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals and a blocked shot. Stephanie Kuiper had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks.
The Lady Trojans play again on Friday night at 5:30pm. The game will be played at Aurora Christian High School.
