Mrs. Debbie Van Prooyen

Personal Profile

I love different languages and sounds.  When I was a kid I lived in the Netherlands for 2 years while my Dad went to school in Amsterdam. There I learned Dutch while I went to Dutch Christian school for 4th and 5th grade.  In high school I took Latin from Mr. Harkema but switched to French at Chicago Christian High as a sophomore.  My junior year I added German to my class schedule.  I majored in French and spent 1973 in France at L’Université de Poitiers in Tours.  While staying home to raise my 3 children I started taking Spanish classes and became fluent in that language too.  I’m basically a foreign language geek!

Professional Profile

I graduated from Trinity Christian College in 1974.B.A. in French and secondary education with an English minor and completed my MA from Concordia University in Curriculum and Instruction.  My first job after college was teaching French at Chicago Christian High School from 1974-1978.  I joined the Timothy faculty in 1988 to teach Spanish..

Philosophical Profile

My God is the Lord of my life as well as my classroom.  I am blessed to be able to proclaim his Lordship in every class I teach whether it be spoken or not.  God created us to understand both the structure and sense that can be seen in grammar as well as the creativity that we humans can play with in culture and sounds of language.  In readings we can see and discuss whether or not the characters have Christian values or not.  We have a responsibility in the classroom to see all things through a Christian world and life view.
