This spring, reading has really paid off for more than 70 students in grades 4-8. Each year, students in these grades are encouraged to participate in the Bluestem and Caudill reading program, which is promoted by the Illinois School Library Media Association.
On Friday, March 17, more than 50 students accompanied Mrs. Larsen to Barnes & Noble in Oak Brook as their reward for reading all of the nominated books. Each student got to choose two new books for the library – one from next year’s Bluestem or Caudill list, and one of their choosing. Books are labeled with each student’s name, and participants get to be the first to check out their selections. Not only do students get to choose books they’re excited about reading, but they’re already motivated for next year’s program.
More than 70 students celebrated reaching their reading goals during the annual Library Pizza Party on Thursday, April 6. These students enjoyed pizza and ice cream in the library because they read at least 12 of the books nominated for the 2017 Bluestem or Caudill award. Each student took home a book to keep, plus posters and bookmarks.
But the reading celebrations are not over yet. All students in grades 4-6 cast their votes last week for their favorite books of the year. Results will be announced during the second annual TC Readers’ Choice Awards, which will be held in the auditorium at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 24. Students are encouraged to dress for the “red carpet” to celebrate the winners and their reading achievements. Parents are welcome to join us for this fun event!
