From the week of January 15
The Lady Trojans had a very busy week, playing 4 games in 7 days. But a very successful week going 4-0.
They began the week against a scrappy and aggressive Lisle team. A non-conference matchup agains a very familiar team. After two weeks off from game play the girls were ready to play. The game was a very slow paced, defense minded game. We had to adjust multiple times to their drive and shoot type offense. The girls stayed strong, worked together and pulled out the win, 35-25. Jordyn Strube and Olivia Schuringa lead the scoring with 7 points each. Emily DeBoer added 6.
Conference play began again for us on Tuesday, heading over to rival Chicago Christian. A much better team, Chicago Christian came out hard and ready to play. They had the hot hand all game and we had to dig a bit deeper to get some stops. A very good all around team effort lead us to the victory, 71-53. Patience and a good inside game helped us put the game away in the 4th. Hannah Schuringa lead the scoring with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Sureya Alex added 12, Olivia Schuringa added 10, Jordyn Strube 9, Heidi Westra 8.
Thursday Elmwood park came to the WAC. Another big conference win with a final score of 58-14. Once again our team effort made for a very nice game, and a chance to work on some areas we wanted to improve on. Jordyn Strube lead the scoring with 16 points, Hannah added 12, Olivia 10 and Emily added 10 and a game high 7 rebounds.
To round out our week, the Lady Trojans traveled to Illiana. Playing the last game there as Illiana will be moving to Indiana next season and no longer in our conference. A bit of a slow start, and much too casual play saw the lady Trojans only up 25-14 at the half. Once again some very nice passing, a bit of pressure and a great inside game lead us to our 4th victory of the week. Hannah Schuringa lead the way with 16 points and 9 rebounds, Olivia added 9 points and 10 rebounds. Emily DeBoer had a game high and season high 12 rebounds.
Congrats to the Lady Trojans on a great week of ball, their record now improves to 13-8, and 6-3 in Conference play. Please come out again this week as the Trojans are home on Thursday, January 25th.
It was a busy week for the boys basketball program, as we played 3 games in 5 days vs. Guerin Prep, Immaculate Conception and Illiana Christian.
The week got off to a strong start with the varsity team defeating Guerin Prep on Tuesday night in River Grove 67-49. The team was led in scoring by Brandon Orange and Michael Thomas, scoring 22 and 20 points respectively. Ty Merrick played a solid all-around game contributing 6 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds.
After Tuesday, the attention turned to “The Battle of Elmhurst” and our Friday home game vs ICCP. The boys came out firing, building a 20-6 advantage after the 1st quarter. Michael Thomas and Matt Owens led the way as they each connected on two 3-pointers in the quarter. The Knights from ICCP slowly got back into the game, but the Trojans put together enough stops in the 4th quarter and made just enough free throws to secure the 50-42 victory. The team was led in scoring by Michael Thomas with 17 points, but got great contributions from several guys including Ty Merrick, Matt Owens and Brandon Orange, who all scored 9 points.
The boys basketball program concluded a busy week last week by making the trip to compete against long-time rival Illiana Christian on Saturday for the last time before Illiana moves to their new building in Indiana next year.
The Varsity squad completed a perfect 3 and 0 week by defeating Illiana 62-40. The Trojans came out fast again building a 25-10 lead after one quarter. The Trojans never allowed the Vikings to get back into the game behind great team defense and unselfish play on the offensive side of the ball. Matt Owens finished the game with 16 points and Brandon Orange secured a double-double with a 15 point, 13 rebound performance to pace the team. Strong performances were also turned in by Ty Merrick (5 points, 10 rebounds), Michael Thomas (10 points), and Chris Brooks and Nick Huisman (7 points each). It was a great way to end the week, as each player on the team got on the floor and contributed to the victory.
The varsity team heads into another important week with a 13-4 record as we prepare to play Wheaton Academy at home on Tuesday, and Chicago Christian away on Friday night.
The lower levels of the program finished off their busy week at Illiana as well with the freshmen capping of their own 3 and 0 week, while the sophomore team was defeated by Illiana to end their week with a 1 and 2 record.
