Seal of Biliteracy Program

The Illinois State Board of Education has established a Seal of Biliteracy program to recognize high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and in one or more other world languages. This recognition is designated on a student’s transcript and high school diploma with a receipt of the State Seal of Biliteracy, provided that all conditions and requirements for the program have been met.
Benefits:
- Acknowledgement of biliteracy on resumes and applications.
- Students may appear as stronger candidates to employers.
- Colleges may waive their world language requirement (if applicable).
- Colleges may identify students for specific scholarships..
Qualifications:
- Score a 4 or higher on the AP English Language and Composition Exam.
- Score a 4 or higher or intermediate high on a World Language Exam.
Process if Interested:
Complete the Seal of Biliteracy Interest Form.
The high school registrar will reach out to discuss next steps.

Dear Parents & Students:
The Illinois State Board of Education has established a Seal of Biliteracy program to recognize high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and in one or more other world languages. This recognition is designated on a student’s transcript and high school diploma with a receipt of the State Seal of Biliteracy, provided that all conditions and requirements for the program have been met.
In order to qualify for this program, students must take an approved standardized test in English and the world language of choice. The English test is the AP Language, ACT, or SAT. The world language test will depend on the language. (If you are currently registered in AP Language, you will take the AP exam as designated.)
The tests can take place anytime during the high school student’s career, but recognition will be designated upon graduation. In order to be considered proficient and receive the recognition, a score of 4 or higher is required on the AP test and a score of intermediate high on the approved world language test.
