Timothy Christian Lady Trojan are Regional Champs!
The Lady Trojans began tournament play as the number one seeded team in our Regional. Chicago Collins won the play in game, so the Trojans would face them on Wednesday. A much weaker team, with a bit less speed than TC had us pressing to begin and playing an aggressive 3-2 zone. Not the best showing of our talents, but the Trojans had a comfortable lead at halftime with a score of 20-6. Coming out a bit too relaxed, Collins had a bit of a run in the 3rd, behind some nice shooting by their sophomore guard. But the Trojans regrouped and our inside game came to life and TC went on to win by a score of 49-30. Jordyn led the scoring with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Olivia added 11 points, 7 of them in the 3rd quarter and grabbed 5 rebounds. Hannah also put in 8 points and 6 rebounds.
Next game, Regional Championship. Friday brought on a rematch from last seasons Regional Championship where the Trojans fell to Lisle, in OT. We had a lot to prove and worked hard to prepare. We came out with a very prepared box and one to shut down their main scorer and leader of the team. Heidi Westra and Abby Carstensen had the assignment and wow, did they nail it. We had height and we had quickness and we had two girls who wanted to shut her down. We held Natalie Takahashi to 7 points, all of which came from the free throw line. She was not allowed to make one basket. The rest of the defense had to work extra hard as well, and I was so proud of the effort of every girl. Jordyn and Emily stepped up and lead our rebounding with 7 each. Emily was huge for us the second half scoring 8 of her 14 points. Lauren and Abby came of the bench and each made two 3-pointers that made the Lisle defense have to come out to guard us so that opened our inside game back up. It was just a fantastic game, in front of a wonderful crowd and we could not have been prouder. TC won, 42-33.
Sectionals begin on Monday at 6:00 at Chicago Christian. The Lady Trojans will take on Chicago Carver Military Academy. Please come out and support your Lady Trojans.
Also a big congratulations goes out to Lauren Gehrke as she advanced in the 3-point competition. She will shoot next on Thursday night at 5:30 at Chicago Christian before the Sectional Championship game.
It was an abbreviated week for the varsity boys basketball team as the team’s Friday night game vs. Ridgewood was postponed due to the snow storm. The team will now play 3 games this week Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
However, the boys did manage to add another win to their season total by defeating Elmwood Park High School last Tuesday at home in the WAC. The boys started fast and took control of the game early by out-scoring the Tigers 18-7 in the 1st quarter, followed by an equally impressive 2nd quarter to take a commanding 36-13 lead into halftime.
The 3rd quarter began much the same way as the lead swelled to 30 points, enabling the Trojans to get every player into the game. The Trojans walked away with a convincing 68-46 victory to improve to 19-4 and 9-0 in conference play.
Against Elmwood Park, the Trojans were led by Brandon Orange who poured in 23 points, Matt Owens’ 9 points and 8 assists, and Danardo Jones’ 8 points and monster 2-handed dunk.
The Trojans now look to wrap-up conference play with senior night vs Guerin Prep at home on Tuesday, and away games against Ridgewood and St. Edward on Wednesday and Friday night. We’d love to see a great crowd on Tuesday night as we conclude our 1st season in the WAC and celebrate the contributions of our 6 seniors: Nick Huisman, Michael Martens, Ty Merrick, Brandon Orange, Shakir Tharpe, and Michael Thomas.
Looking ahead, the Trojans will begin State Tournament play on Tuesday, February 20 at 6:00pm at the Guerin Prep Regional, and if they win will play for the Regional Championship next Friday, February 23 at Guerin Prep.
