iPad User Agreement

iPad User Agreement

Timothy Christian Schools ("TCS") is dedicated to developing students with the proper skills, knowledge, and wisdom necessary to be adequately equipped for today's technologically engaged world. To better accomplish this task, TCS has implemented a one-to-one initiative (i.e., one device to one student) using iPads . In this way, the iPad is an educational tool, similar to many that precede it, but more powerful and flexible. Through the one-to-one initiative, TCS's goal is to:

  1. Enhance and accelerate learning;
  2. Promote collaboration;
  3. Increase student engagement;
  4. Create an environment that encourages student-centered learning; and
  5. Strengthen 21st century skills.

It is our goal to train our students to use technology for the glory of God. However, students and their parents are responsible for the appropriate care, hand ling, and use of the iPads as outlined in this Agreement, and use of TCS iPads, computer network (local and wide area networks), email, and Internet access, collectively referred to as the TCS "electronic network, " is a privilege, not a right. Violation of the TCS Acceptable Use of Electronic Networks policy or this Agreement shall result in a cancellation of those privileges, disciplinary action, and/or appropriate legal action. Please note that references herein to "parent(s)" include natural or adoptive parent(s) and legal guardian(s).

In order for a student to be loaned a TCS iPad, the student and the student's parent must acknowledge online at the time of registration that they have received, read, understand, and agree to follow and be bound by the TCS iPad User Guide & Agreement.

1. Receiving & Returning iPads

  1. Receiving the iPad: TCS iPads will be distributed to students at the start of the school year. In order for a student to be loaned an iPad, the student and the student's parent must- agree to the iPad Acknowledgement.
  2. Returning the iPad: TCS iPads are the property of TCS and, unless instructed otherwise, the iPads and any related accessories must be returned during the final week of the school year. If a student withdraws from TCS during the school year, the iPad and any related accessories must be returned to TCS prior to the student's last day of attendance. The iPad and accessories must be returned in operable condition, with all parts intact. If the iPad or any accessories are not returned as directed, TCS may, in addition to requiring the student and parent to pay the full replacement cost, file a theft report with the appropriate law enforcement agency.

2. Taking Care of the iPad

Caring for the iPad: The iPad assigned to a student remains the property of TCS and must be maintained appropriately. Students are responsible for the general care of the iPad. In addition to the manufacturer's instructions included with the iPad, if any, each student must care for the iPad as follows:

  1. Keep the iPad in the protective case provided by TCS at all times;
  2. Only use a clean, soft cloth to clean the iPad's screen. Do not use cleansers of any type;
  3. Insert and remove cords and cables carefully to prevent damage to connectors;
  4. Do not write or draw on, apply stickers or labels to, or otherwise mark up or deface the iPad or related accessories;
  5. Handle the device carefully. Screens can crack not only when dropped, but also when twisted or subjected to pressure from stepping or leaning on them. Do not stack other objects (books, binders, etc.) on top of the iPad;
  6. Do not leave the iPad in places of extreme temperature, humidity, or limited ventilation (e.g., in a car) for an extended period of time;
  7. Keep food and beverages away from the iPad;
  8. Keep the iPad secure at all times. Do not leave it unattended or in an unlocked locker, desk, or other location; and write down the identification number for the iPad for easy reference.

3. Using the iPad

  1. Acceptable Use of iPad: Use of a TCS iPad, whether at home or at school, is to be for educational purposes consistent with TCS curricular goals and policies. A student may not use (or allow others to use) the iPad loaned to him/her in a way that violates the TCS's Acceptable Use of Electronic Networks policy (See Board Policy and Student Handbook, Acceptable Use of Electronic Networks). By using the iPad, the parent and student agree to abide by the School and Personal Property policies including but not limited to the Acceptable Use of Electronic Networks policy, the Conduct Expectations & Discipline policies, and the Human Dignity & Anti-Bullying policy, as a well as all other applicable policies and the guidelines in this document and the Parent-Student Handbook. Violation of any of these policies or guidelines could result in the student's loss of the privilege of using the iPad; discipline, up to and including suspension or expulsion; and referral to law enforcement.
  2. Using the iPad at TCS: Unless otherwise instructed, the iPad is intended for use at school every day. Students must bring iPads to school each day fully charged. A student who fails to bring his /her iPad to school will be responsible for completing the course work as if they had their iPad present. TCS may provide loaner iPads to a student if the student's iPad battery runs out during the school day. The availability of loaners will depend on the school's supply of loaner iPads.
    The volume on the iPad must be muted at all times except when specific permission is given by the teacher or staff member for headphones to be used or sound played for instructional purposes.
    Internet games are not allowed to be played on iPads during class time or study hall.
    Use of iPads is not allowed in bathrooms or locker rooms.
  3. Using the iPad Outside TCS: In the event a student uses the iPad at home or elsewhere outside TCS, the student is bound by the same policies, procedures, and guidelines as at school.
    1. Parent Responsibility for Supervision Outside TCS: A student's parent is responsible for monitoring and supervising the student's use of the iPad, including Internet access, outside of school and for making every effort to ensure the student's compliance with the obligations and responsibilities described in this Agreement and in all applicable TCS policies related to the student's use of the iPad. TCS is not responsible for filtering inappropriate material or monitoring students' Internet activity outside of school.
      Any parent who does not wish to assume this responsibility should so indicate on Acknowledgment Form. In such cases, arrangements will be made for the student to leave the iPad at school. The student will be responsible for picking up the iPad each day prior to the start of the school day.
    2. Technical Support Outside TCS: TCS cannot guarantee that the iPad will function outside TCS at the same level as inside TCS. Configuration of any home network connection is the student and parent's responsibility and not the responsibility of TCS. Any configuration applied to the iPad that impairs its performance in school may be removed by TCS staff.
  4. Accessories: TCS will provide accessories necessary for use of the iPad, including but not limited to, an iPad cover and charger. The decision whether to purchase additional accessories (such as an extra charger, keyboard, stylus, etc.) for the device rests with the student and parent. Students and parents, however, shall not purchase an additional cover for the iPad; the student's iPad must be in the TCS-issued cover at all times. As with any personal property brought to school, TCS reserves the right to prohibit the use of any accessory and is not responsible for any loss or damage to personal property. In addition, TCS cannot and does not guarantee that an accessory purchased at one point in time will be compatible with devices provided in the future.
  5. Personalizing the iPad: Inappropriate pictures, images, or other media must not be used as the lock-screen or background on the iPad. Students must not write or draw on, apply stickers or labels to, or otherwise mark up or deface the iPad or related accessories.
  6. Photographs & Videos: Students shall not take photos or videos with an iPad except when specific permission is given by the teacher or staff member. Photos and videos taken with the iPad are strictly for educational purposes.

4. iPad Data & Software

  1. Managing Files and Saving Work: Work done by a student on an iPad is to be saved to the iPad itself, unless instructed otherwise. It is the student's responsibility to make sure the work is not lost due to a failure or loss of the iPad. It is recommended that students save and sync work with their Google Drive account.
  2. Personal Content on the iPad: Students are encouraged not to store personal content on the iPad. Any content (including, but not limited to, documents, music or audio files, and photographs) stored on the iPad potentially could be subject to access by third parties pursuant to law or subject to discovery in a legal proceeding. In addition, personal content may be deleted in the course of routine maintenance and/or troubleshooting. It is the student's responsibility to back up all personal content stored on the iPad.
  3. TCS-Required Software: TCS will provide any software, including applications ("apps") required to use the iPad for school purposes. This software shall not be removed. TCS may update, add, or remove software at any time for any reason, without prior notice.
  4. Installing Software: The TCS 1.T. department will provide a Self-Service Portal on all student iPads with school approved apps. Installing any apps through any other methods or installing apps not available from the Self-Service Portal is a violation of this agreement and will be result in disciplinary action.
  5. Updates: The TCS I.T. department will instruct students regarding updating iPad software, including apps, and when and how to install iOS updates. Generally students are encouraged to update apps as new versions are released. Students shall not update the iOS systems on iPads until the update is approved and students are instructed to do so by the TCS I.T. department.
  6. iPad Data as TCS Records: Data saved to the iPad or to Internet-based storage space (i.e., the "cloud") via the iPad are not maintained by TCS as student records. In the event data stored on an iPad or stored in the cloud via an iPad needs to be maintained by TCS for any reason, TCS will take affirmative steps to preserve it.
  7. Jailbreaking Prohibited: "Jailbreaking" is the act of replacing the manufacturer's operating system with custom software, allowing the user to circumvent the manufacturer's security and licensing restrictions. The act of jailbreaking or otherwise disrupting the configuration of the iPad voids the manufacturer's warranty and is a violation of this Agreement.
  8. TCS Configuration: As part of TCS's management system, predefined profiles will be installed on the iPads. Removal or modification, or any attempt to remove or modify, these profiles or their restrictions is prohibited and will be considered a violation of this Agreement.
  9. Compliance with Copyright: In using the iPad, the student must follow TCS policies governing use of copyrighted material and applicable copyright law.
  10. No Expectation of Privacy: There is no expectation of privacy for any communication made using the iPad or for any content created or stored on the iPad. TCS reserves the right to inspect the iPad and its contents at any time and for any reason.

5. Repair, Loss, or Damage to iPad

  1. Technical Support: If a student's iPad is not functioning properly, the student should notify the teacher. If necessary, the TCS I.T. department will assess the iPad and attempt to correct any problems with it. TCS does not accept responsibility for the loss of student work or any personal software, media, or other data on the iPad lost as part of efforts to repair the iPad. Students and parents are responsible for cooperating with TCS in the recovery, repair, or replacement of the student's iPad.
  2. Loss of or Damage to iPad: If a student's iPad is lost or damaged, the student must report it immediately to the student's teacher. Students and parents are responsible for cooperating with TCS in the recovery, repair, or replacement of the student's iPad.

    1. A student's parents will be required to pay at least $50.00 toward the replacement cost of a damaged iPad.
    2. If the iPad is stolen, the student's parents will be required to pay $100.00 toward the cost of a replacement iPad. To verify that the device was stolen, a police report must be submitted to TCS.
    3. If the damage is the result of a student's negligence or intentional destruction, or if the iPad is lost, the student's parent will be required to pay in full for the repair or replacement of the equipment.
  4. Responsibility for Lost or Damaged iPad Related Accessories: In the event a student's iPad related accessories supplied by TCS, including but not limited to the iPad cover and charger, are lost, stolen, or damaged, the student's parent will be responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement.
  5. Loaner iPads: Loaner iPads may be issued to a student whose iPad is being repaired or replaced. The availability of loaners will depend on the school's supply of loaner iPads.

6. Waiver

Waiver of iPad-Related Claims: By agreeing to the "iPad Acknowledgement," the parent acknowledges that he/she read, reviewed with the student, understands, and agrees to follow all guidelines and policies outlined or referenced in this Agreement and agrees to be bound by this Agreement. The parent also agrees and represents that the iPad, including any related accessories, was delivered in good working order and that it must be returned to TCS in good working order. By agreeing to the iPad Acknowledgement, the parent waives any and all claims the parent or student (and each of your respective heirs, successors, and assigns) may have against TCS, its School Board, and its individual Board members, employees, and agents relating to the use of the iPad or this Agreement.
