Jr. Chamber Ensemble hosts Composer-in-Residence and performs at SINGFEST

Timothy’s Jr. Chamber Ensemble was selected last year, along with Barrington High School, Glenbard East High School and Glenbard West High School to join the Anima-Glen Ellyn Children’s Choir on a joint sponsored Illinois Arts Council Grant to host composer-in-residence Tim Takach, last Thursday. Mr. Takach is a performer, choral director and composer from Minnesota. He studied at St. Olaf College and is nationally renowned for his compositions. His work has been reviewed as “gorgeous” (Washington Post) and “stunning” (Lawrence Journal- World).

While at TCS, Jr. Chamber had the opportunity to not only meet him and ask him questions, but also work on his newly composed piece for 3 part mixed voices, We Come from Music. This piece was commissioned by Anima and was premiered at Anima’s annual Singfest, this past Saturday.  This annual community event for singers 4th – 8th grade is held at Elmhurst CRC church, right in TC’s backyard. Jr. Chamber ensemble was also asked to be the guest Choir at Singfest, joining the Anima Touring Choir and Singfest participants from schools in Cook, DuPage, and Will counties.

In addition to Jr. Chamber Ensemble hosting Mr. Takach and being the guest choir at the Singfest Concert, a total of 56 Timothy students were involved from grades 5-8. Students learned several pieces before and after school with Ms. DeJager in preparation for the concert and on Saturday, April 14th, and spent the day learning from Mr. Takach and Dr. Sundquist, artistic director of Anima. Teachers spent time in masterclasses with both, working on choral repertoire and in professional development sessions. The day ended with a free concert highlighting the student’s work.

Congratulations to the TCS Jr. Chamber Ensemble for another stellar performance and, to all of the 4th-8th graders who not only got to work with a living composer, but be part of his composition’s world premiere.
