Summer is a great time for you to find pleasure in the riches of books and to keep your reading skills honed. To foster both of these attributes, Timothy has a summer reading program. Please read through the assignments below and complete the one that pertains to you. Doing so will help you understand the reading and be prepared for the first days of school.
These instructions will be given in class during the last week of school; however, the instructions are repeated here for your review as needed. Follow the links for handouts for each grade level. All freshmen complete a summer reading assignment; however, only students enrolled in honors or AP English classes for grades 10-12 complete summer reading assignments.
Grade 9: All freshmen are to read Jack London’s The Call of the Wild and complete their class’s note-taking guide, due the first day of school. (English 9 packet) (Honors English 9H guide) Students will take an assessment on the novel a few days later. Questions: lindloff@timothychristian.com; garcia@timothychristian.com
Grade 10: Students enrolled in English 10H (Honors) are to choose a memoir or work of narrative nonfiction. Students who do not know what to choose are encouraged to check the list provided by Mr. McLellan (list of memoirs + narrative nonfiction). On the first day of class, they should have completed annotations and be able to answer some comprehension questions about their reading (Honors Summer Reading directions). There will be a writing assignment during the first week of school (but not on the first day). Questions: mclellan@timothychristian.com
Grade 11: Students enrolled in English 11H (Honors) are to read My Antonia by Willa Cather. Use of the reading guide is recommended since it provides useful background and preparation for class discussions, a short test, and a paper to be written about the novel during the first week of class. Questions: tornow@timothychristian.com
Grade 12: Students enrolled in English 12 AP are to read the following: John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath; Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country; and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. See instructions here : AP summer reading instructions 2022
Annotations are due the first day of class. Please be sure to have the correct edition of these books as listed on eCampus to expedite our class time work with these novels. We will be spending about the first three weeks of school on these books. Questions: garcia@timothychristian.com
