Student Council President, National Honor Society member, Spanish Honor Society member, member of the Fine Arts Committee, member of the Octoberfest Committee, french horn player, freshman retreat leader, and DECA member. Dakota Tameling did it all.
But out of all those activities, band was by far his favorite.
Dakota tried every single sport there was when he was younger, but had no interest in any of them. But magic happened the minute he picked up the french horn. He realized this was something he enjoyed doing and something that he was good at.
In an effort to further his passion for music, Dakota joined the Chicago Youth Symphony. Here, he had the chance to play with some of the best musicians in the world, who attended the best music academies.
To Dakota, Timothy’s music program was better than any other academy he could attend.
“I enjoyed being a leader within Timothy’s program, our band was really strong,” Dakota says. “It was really fun to apply what I learn from the Chicago Youth Symphony to our program.”
The band program explored new types of music, as well as new places. These places included concerts at Disney and Six Flags Great America. On top of performing at these places, the band program had the opportunity to compete in different competitions, some within Timothy and outside competitions as well.
Dakota plans to continue his music career at High Point University in High Point, North Carolina, next year. He will likely double major in business and music.
“My life would look so different if I wasn’t surrounded by people from Timothy,” Dakota says. “The people here are really special. I have a lot of hope for the future of this community and it is something that I’m really happy I was a part of.”
