I’ll play until they have to scrape me off the stage.
James Young, STYX
Yes, I know some of you will roll your eyes as I name-drop, but James Young (“JY”) is my cousin – guitarist, singer, and songwriter...and often referred to as “The Godfather of STYX.” For the younger audience reading this, it might be helpful to share that STYX held some of the top songs and albums in the world during the 1970’s and early 1980’s. I’ve been to plenty of their concerts and backstage many times. One thing I can tell you about James: he passionately loves music. And guess what...so does Timothy!
It is true that some schools have taken the path of least resistance and dropped their music program this year. The guidelines for music classes are overwhelmingly comprehensive, but that hasn’t stopped our music department and our musicians. I have witnessed our students rehearsing and performing indoors and outdoors, they sing and play with masks and specially music-customized masks (even ponchos), they have found a good rhythm in-person and virtual, and we have an abundance of PPE for our music classes. If you are looking for an example of rolling up your sleeves and adapting, look no further than the Timothy music department — students and staff.
Soon enough you’ll have an opportunity to witness our music department in action. Although it won’t be in the auditorium, you can do so in your own living room. When the time comes, find a comfortable chair (but one where you can still tap your feet on the floor) and experience the blessing and the unstoppable force of music. Timothy has held music classes for over one hundred years...and 2020 will be no exception. In the Christian school, music ushers us into the presence of God. So just like my cousin, JY, we will not stop. We’re going to keep playing and singing.
Press On, Timothy Music Department!
