Ben Vander Wal, Class of 2022

The Timothy Christian Varsity Baseball team won the Regional Championship on Monday night in one of the most thrilling games in Timothy history. The Trojans beat DePaul Prep 4-3 in 12 innings, yes you read that right, on a walkoff double from Fletcher Roemmich with 2 outs in the 12th.

The lengthy game started slow, with neither team getting on the board early. Kyle Steiner made a tremendous diving catch in center in the 3rd inning, saving 2 runs for the Trojans. Timothy struck first in the bottom of the 5th after a single from Ethan Munk, scoring Trey Keizer who was on base after a double. DePaul Prep tied it up again in the top of the 6th but were limited to 1 run after a great catch by Evan Montella. Timothy stormed back and regained their lead in the bottom of the inning when Myles Foy singled to drive in Casey Folkerts. DePaul knocked in one in the top of the 7th, and it stayed tied 2-2, so the game headed to the 8th.

In the 8th inning, Donald Tober was replaced on the mound by Jacob Friend. Donald Tober threw 7.2 sensational innings, only giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, with a whopping 14 strikeouts. Jacob Friend was great in relief, throwing 4.1 innings with 4 strikeouts.

Timothy Christian High School wins Regional Championship

After a scoreless 8th and 9th, DePaul Prep scored 1 in the top of the 10th, and the Trojans needed to rally to chase 1 run. After a Roemmich single, Donald Tober ripped a double to the wall and scored Roemmich, tying the game and sending it to the 11th. No runs were scored in the 11th, and DePaul Prep put a 0 on the board in the top of the 12th.

The Trojans headed to the bottom of the inning at the top of their order with a chance to win the game. After 2 quick outs, Ethan Munk walked. Up walked Fletcher Roemmich, already with 2 hits on the day. On a 1-0 count, Roemmich ripped a double into the gap between right and center. Coach Whartnaby sent Ethan Munk around third, and DePaul relayed the ball to the plate. Munk slid into home, and the ball squirted loose from the catcher. Game over! Trojans are the Regional Champions!

The next game for the Trojans will be Wednesday 5/25 at 4:30 vs Chicago Latin at Montini. Let’s go support our boys! You must have digital tickets for the game. You can purchase tickets here: https://gofan.co/app/events/611400?schoolId=IL15588
