On February 27, Evan Frens (8th grade) and Aiden Hoogstra (sophomore) were invited to an award celebration for the Youth Scholarship Programs through the local VFW in Villa Park. There were seven students and families present at the ceremony. Several veterans came to show support to the students. Evan Frens was awarded second place for the Patriot's Pen Scholarship. His essay was one of over 150 essays submitted by 6th-8th graders in three surrounding middle schools. The topic was "what patriotism means to me." Aiden Hoogstra won second place for the high school Voice of Democracy Scholarship. His pre-recorded speech was judged among other high school submissions in the area. Aiden has participated and won scholarships from the VFW for the past few years.
