IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM JUSTIN HORNE
Many of us were fortunate to have great parent role models. Whether we wanted to or not, we ended up talking a lot and acting a lot like our parents. This can be a good thing when it comes to raising our own children. We think about what worked for us as kids and copy it with our own children. The problem in today’s world is that our parents didn’t have to worry about smartphones and social media. We don’t have a generation that has modeled how to handle this technology in a child’s hands. We can look to scripture for truth and guidance, but I’ve yet to find the passage that says when I should allow my child to have their own cell phone!
This is where we have to partner together to help raise our students as God intended. I’ll be sharing resources from time to time and would love to hear what you use to stay informed as well. Every family is different, so one solution or suggestion may not work for all and I certainly don’t have this parenting thing all figured out, but God wants me to work at it. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
One newsletter and site I subscribe to is smartsocial.com. It is a for-profit site with app reviews and other helpful information for creating a safe and positive social profile. Here is an example of an article I received today from this site reviewing a potentially dangerous app that children are using. Screenagers and Common Sense Media are two other helpful sites.
To further help our parents and middle school students, we’ll be having a daytime presentation by CyberSafety Consulting for 7th and 8th graders in October and a virtual parent event in the evening. Stay tuned for more details.
