The sounds of chattering and clanking tools nearly drown out the country music in the classroom. This is not an ordinary class, but a Small Engines and Equipment class — where students learn about assembling and fixing small machinery. The class gives them a career test drive and teaches them real-world skills.
This is the second year that Mr. Kevin Neander has taught Small Engines and Equipment during Renew. “Everyone drives a car but nobody knows how to fix it. They can learn by taking a class like this on how to fix everyday problems,” explains Mr. Neander.
There is no experience necessary to sign up for the class. In fact, most students do not have a background in motors and machinery. However, it is already easy to tell that students are comfortable working with the tools and engines in front of them by the amount of engine grease on their hands. Mr. Neander and his students are not afraid to get a little dirty while completing their challenge.
Junior John Tragos joined this Renew Class due to his interest in motors and auto repair. John says, “My friends and I work on cars together, mostly German but some American cars.” He adds, “I am most looking forward to working on the boat motors since I'm most familiar with larger motors.”
Small Engines and Equipment is just one of many Renew classes that provide students with hands-on experiences and the opportunity to try something outside of the regular classroom.
Liliana Ohm is a junior and communications intern during Renew.
