Timothy students and teachers alike were decked out in sparkles and bowties this Wednesday to celebrate their favorite books and their love of reading at the fourth annual Timothy Readers’ Choice Awards.

Students were involved in many different ways during the morning’s 4th-6th grade show: they presented and received award statues for books in 10 genre categories, explained grade-level reading challenges, played drums, helped with decorations, and made posters. A record number of students even told book-related jokes. During the show, students who participated in this year’s Bluestem and Caudill reading programs were recognized for their accomplishments. The final award given was the Book of the Year Award, which went to TC favorite The Meltdown by Jeff Kinney.

The winners of the coveted Best Dressed Class went to Mrs. Brouwer’s fifth grade class, and Mrs. VanProyen took home the Best Dressed Teacher trophy. Best Dressed Student went to Koty Fox, whose colorful suit stole the show.

Seven book trailers, created by sixth-grade students for the seven Best Book of the Year nominees, premiered at the show. After learning how to use iMovie in computer class, all sixth graders wrote and directed short commercials; the best were chosen for the show.

In the afternoon, it was the younger crowd’s turn to celebrate reading. Students in kindergarten, first, second, and third grades voted earlier in the week on their favorite book of the year, and the results for each grade level were announced during the program. Teachers and students also talked about how
each grade met their reading goals for the year, and students who participated in the Monarch reading program were recognized with certificates.

Both shows ended with a fun teacher video and encouragement to keep the fun going by reading over the summer. More details about Summer Reading Challenges can be found on the Summer Page. If you’re looking for reading suggestions, check out the list of winners below!
