As soon as the sound of a shotgun sounds through the air, golf clubs begin swinging. Sponsored golfers are set at each different hole to start and go through the 7-Bridges Golf Course competing for the annual Timothy golfing outing.
The golf outing is an ongoing Timothy tradition that has been happening every fall for over twenty years. It is an athletic fundraiser for all Timothy Christian Middle School and High School sports teams.
The planning for this event starts as soon as the school year ends and continues all summer long. Bob Venhousen has been the director of advancement at Timothy for 8 years, but has been helping run this event for the past 10 years.
“It’s an amazing community building event,” says Mr. VenHousen. “Each year has a different feel, and each year it continues to be fun for everyone and so beneficial to our school.”
The event begins at 8 AM sharp and every year it opens with a time of prayer. Giveaway bags and baskets are then given away. The first event is a chipping contest for all the golfers, while this takes places the volunteers are busy preparing food and setting up for the events that will precede.
This event has a project based fundraising goal. In previous years, the raised money has been used to build the new weight room, bleachers, tennis courts, helped renovate the track, and brought additions to the baseball field.
There is a strong focus on Project IMPACT this year, the new middle school that will be opening on campus on September 14th. But the majority of the money raised is being used to fund the athletic budget. This includes: new uniforms for certain sports teams, a new decorative fence that will be the entrance to the soccer field, a John Deere Gator to keep maintenance and transfer injured athletes, and to purchase the cheer team much needed equipment.
Each sports team gets involved by creating their own basket. Baskets are filled with tickets and other goods and are raffled off at the event. The baskets range from $250 to $1,000. The sports team then receives that money for their program.
This year 4 records were broken at the Timothy golf outing. We were blessed with a record number of 105 sponsors, a record of 164 golfers, $150,000 raised, and the best weather that they have had in all the years. In fact, additional golfers were added up until the day of the event.
We had many winners at the golf outing this year. A special congratulations to our morning 1st place winners: Ryan Brandsma, Jon Groot, Andrew Burdick, and Josh Molnar. Also, our 1st afternoon winners were: Zach Hill, Dr. Joe Grasso, Jim Marshall, and Ed Lewis.
But the real winners of this outing are the student athletes and their athletic programs that will benefit from the money raised.
Thanks to all the golfers, volunteers, the work of the committee, and sponsors, this event continues to grow, strengthening Timothy’s athletic department. A department very special and important part of the Timothy Christian community.
