By George, He’s Got It!

1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” George Drenth is celebrating 30 years at Timothy in the maintenance department! If you’re part of the Timothy community, chances are you know George Drenth. If you have dropped your kids (or grandkids) off on a Monday or Thursday morning, he is the man that waves to you as you exit campus and head north on Prospect.
George has been faithfully serving the countless students and faculty that have graced the halls of Timothy Christian Schools over the last 30 years. Chances are also pretty good that he is the man that cleaned up after your child or maybe even you!
For many years, George worked nights. I still remember my first interactions with George as a high school student trying to “con” my way into the gym after hours. While I can’t imagine the sound of bouncing balls and constant shouting coming from the gym would be appealing to anyone trying to work, George just smiled and opened the doors for us.
Imagine the changes to campus George has witnessed in the last 30 years during lunchtime alone. Back in the 90’s when I was in high school, kids drank Mountain Dew and Allsport. Now they sip on fruit smoothies from Timothy’s coffee and smoothie bar.
Interestingly enough, though, George looks the same in my memories as he does now. Same wiry tall frame, same gray/white hair, same smile, and, after all these years, he’s still faithfully using his gifts by serving the Timothy community. Oftentimes, change is for the better. I, however, am incredibly grateful that some things stay the same.
